Netbook failed - Unable to install WeatherLink on W7 SP1

Post by RayProudfoot »

I'm afraid the inevitable happened this morning when I rebooted my 12 year-old Samsung NC10 netboook and the BIOS reported "No OS present".

I have a spare Windows 7 laptop and I tried to install WeatherLink from the original CD. A message appeared during the install saying the install could not continue. I then found a downloadable version of WL from the Weatherlink.com site and tried that. Same result. I rang ProData but they couldn't offer any help.

I googled the message and a couple of people with W7 have had the same issue and Davis supplied a fix. I've left a message on their site asking for help. It seems it may be related to USB drivers.

I should be okay once I can get the WL software installed and the Cumulus1 help here is excellent. All my data is backed up. It's just the stress of sorting out this problem. Hopefully I can get things working again today or tomorrow.

Has anyone else gone through this and had the same problem? If so, how did you resolve yours?

Your Topic title says W7 SP1 but you say you have a spare Windows 10 laptop, so which one is it?

Wouldn't this be a good time to switch to MX? :D :D

Corrected. It’s a W7 laptop. I see no advantages in switching. I’m happy with C1 and it gives me no problems.

I'd expect to have an answer in about 2 weeks if its just an email to Davis. they are seriously slow at replying.

there is a bit of info on Prodata's website about Win10 and USB drivers.

https://www.manula.com/manuals/pws/davi ... -10-issues

WL also require .NET frame v2 (afaik)

Hi Simon,

Thanks for the link but it's a Windows 7 PC, not 10. I do have .NET installed.

I can get a replacement SSD for the Samsung NC10 running XP. I can download XP and install it from a bootable drive and I have the product key so should be able to install a virgin OS.

Then I can restore everything from a backup and be back up and running again. If Davis come back with a fix I can put everything on this W7 laptop. If they don't reply in a couple of days I'll go for the replacement SSD. The NC10 is still in good nick and a fan was replaced last year.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

The reason I would rather refurbish the Samsung NC10 is because the W7 Acer Travelmate doesn't have a functioning battery. I ordered one from a UK site that turned out to be a Chinese company. It was never recognised by Windows so I sent it back. I had to lie about the contents but Royal Main opened the package later and sent me a message saying the contents had been destroyed. Fortunately the Chinese company had refunded me and paid me for return shipping so I didn't lose out and they never queried the non-return. I guess they know this happens.

The downside of using the W7 laptop is if I get a power cut. It just goes off immediately whereas the Samsung's battery (also from the same supplier) is fine. Fingers crossed I can install XP from a ISO image. Has anyone done this?

Ray do you know what files you require?

I have a few I have downloaded in the past when users had issues with weatherlink and installations. if you Google search for these filenames you see some people having probs with installing it.

CP210xManufacturing.dll
SiUSBXp.dll

not sure where I downloaded them from but have them if needed.

Hi Simon,

No, there's no hint of what files are required but you would imagine they would be included in the setup.exe.

I appreciate your help but I feel my best option is to get the Samsung up and running again with a new SSD. A 256Gb is fine as it's only used for Cumulus, Weatherlink etc.

I have a image of the C drive from 2015 (old but nothing has changed bar a few Windows updates). My weather data is backed up each day onto a NAS drive so that side is secure.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

if the disk totally dead? might be worth trying to clone it with Macrium Reflect if you can.

Totally dead. As soon as you power it up there's a warning sound and then "No Operating System found" appears.

Definitely time to move over to CMX ;)

As for XP, I would stay well clear. It might only be running weather programs, but it's still connected to the internet and XP is now full of security vulnerabilities.

It sits behind a decent Router firewall and has been problem free for ages. After getting off Live Chat with Samsung it does appear the NC10 can take an SSD. I'll be ordering one tomorrow.

CMX looks to be radically different and I'm too old to change.

Does anyone know where the Logging Interval is stored in the WeatherLink program? I'm hoping it's 15 mins or longer.

I'd be a bit wary about rejuvenation to 10yr old Samsung.

Particularly if it's been serving as a 24/7 weather PC for years.
I'd be getting a bit paranoid about the next thing being capacitors failing & the whole thing becoming less stable.

Admittedly I have a dozen plus superseded laptops here & quite a few get rebuild-ed,
but success only seems to come with the one with the known low runtime hours.

Phil.

Edit:- I did notice you mentioned the fan was replaced.

Bit of a double edged sword there.
On one hand it's got a new fan,
but on the other the unit has probably ran at above normal temps for a period with the old fan.
Temperature is a big enemy of capacitors, particularly electrolytics.

@Phil23, points noted. I appreciate it’s lasted well and nothing lasts forever. But the lid is closed so no display showing and the software isn’t that demanding. The new fan has been in 14 months and the old one was replaced as soon as it started making a noise.

My mate has created a bootable USB with Aomei software for a restore. The new SSD should arrive before the end of the week and then I should have it up and running.

I need to consider if CMX is a viable alternative. Does it affect my website? I wouldn’t want that changing. What hardware is best for MX? Something radically different? Data still uploaded to my website hosted by HostPresto?
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.
