'FTP Now' works - regular updates don't

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

'FTP Now' works - regular updates don't

Post by ChristerBerner »

When I push the "Start FTP Now" button the standard files are properly updated and uploaded to my website. Otherwise no updates or uploads take place despite my having ticked "Auto update" and other relevant settings. What can be the problem? (Running Cumulus MX on Windows 10).

What other files are you expecting? If you have not ticked

Include graph data files
Include Moon image file
Enable Realtime
Realtime.txt FTP
Realtimegauges.txt FTP
and set the realtime and upload interval

then only the standard files will be uploaded.

I've ticked and done all those. As I wrote, my problem is that nevertheless no files are ever updated or uploaded while they are when I push "Start FTP Now". What's the difference?

Enable debug logging and FTP logging. Let MX run for a hour, then zip up your MXdiags folder and attach it here along with the FTP log file from the Cumulus MX root folder.

A few interesting things in the logs. Can you share your site's URL?

Enjoy,

Thanks, this may take a little sorting out.

You have installed CumulusMX to C:\Program Files (x86) - this really not recommended at all. Windows restricts programs from writing to Program files. You should create a folder elsewhere to avoid file permission issues.

Cumulus is reporting that it is not getting the minimum set of data it requires in order to function properly - pressure, temperature, and wind.

Does your station have all those sensors connected?

Thanks, Mark.

I copied the MX folder to C:/ and now run it from there. No change, files are not updated and uploaded to web site. I pushed "Start FTP Now" a few minutes ago and the web site was updated, just like before. URL http://81.231.253.21/weather/.

Everything worked just fine for several years with Windows 7 and my Synology web server. The wind sensor stopped working a year ago but only caused those data to be missing.

After a system breakdown I erased the C disk and installed Windows 10.

Since "Start FTP Now" works there shouldn't be anything wrong with the internal connections. Why then doesn't the normal updates work?

Without a wind sensor you will need to add the
NoSensorCheck=1
Entry to the Cumulus.ini file station section.

If you have reinstalled MX did you remember to add that back?

I now inserted "NoSensorCheck = 1" but to no avail. As can be seen on the web site, pressure, temperature and rain fall are properly handled. Only the autoupdates are not.

Seems like you found the issue as it is updating OK now at 1-min interval

Enjoy,

Yes, most satisfactory! It for some reason took a while before regular updates resumed. The crucial remedy was apparently the move of the program folder to C:/, suggested by Mark. Thanks a lot! I'm still puzzled over the fact that the "Start FTP Now" button forced an update even at the previous folder location. It seems to have overridden the Windows prohibition.

Perhaps the FTP now option doesn't require a write to the disk and is done from memory?

New hypothesis: The problem was entirely caused by the missing "NoSensorCheck = 1" in Cumulus.ini. I went back to running MX from C:\Program Files (x86)\Cumulus MX\ with this line in place and it works flawlessly.

My conclusion: The NoSensorCheck should preferably be included by default in the Cumulus.ini file.

That doesn't explain away why FTP Now worked.
