Why do you have to guess, the top of the forum says in BIG RED Letters "Do not allow your PC to go into standby mode while Cumulus is running - read the readme.txt!
Not a guess as I read that too; well too similar to the RTFM thing...I do come from a world of creating and writing standards and typically like to learn the hard way cuz it sticks better sometimes inside of your noggin. I am not a figment of my newton though...well are you a figment of my newton? Well you must be bored or something and have nothing to say these days eh?

That said over the years and specifically relating to Windows as it went from 3.0 to current Windows 10 feature tweaks, defaults typically are hidden way better with multiple steps such that the user has to look there in multiple layers of whatever to make adjustments. Sometimes here personally my hands work but it is so automatic I do not pay attention (like dialing a phone number and not seeing the numbers; if that makes sense.

I am a user of Cumulus;and a forum participant just like you are.

Well new to CumulusMX just like many folks here. I do not welcome insolence though.

I think it's unlikely to be the USB power settings in this case, but it is definitely worth checking.

I'll give the USB power setting a shot, but I did reinstall Windows 10 from scratch yesterday and I still have the issue. Here are the current diags attached. 23:25 in the last one was when it happened. The first two should be OK.

Unrelating to CumulusMX but relating to Windows 10 here having issues relating to power stuff on my Intel Quad core Baytrail computer.

I cannot figure it out. I am using a multitouch screen / software / remote control of the PC via the automation mothership here.

I typically just turn off the screen but not suspend the computer. I have gone to the power settings of every device and disabled the power savings features and overall power modes of the computer.

I remote control shut off the display and cannot turn it on remotely unless I touch the monitor. Then the display goes on.

I do notice that the network device is being disabled cuz I cannot turn on the screen remotely when I shut it off remotely. It is like my manual power settings are not saved or something even though the configuration looks fine to me. The network icon shows the network disabled when the monitor first goes on; after a second or so the network icon shows that it is connected.

I did try to ping the device with the screen off and it wouldn't respond to my pings.

I shut off many of the default on settings for updates and whatever on Windows 10. Just read this morning that it automatically uses peer to peer updating to help it update which was news to me.

I wonder too if the OS gives priority network queuing over to its OS updates (whole network pipe) then waits a bit for queuing any software network stuff until it sees it running for a bit?

Different USB ports didn't help either. I guess I am stuck using Cumulus MX in Linux.

Yeah here running box #2 on Windows server and moving it to an RPi2. Only concern is wearing out the SD card. So far it has been OK.

I messed up my Windows 10 machine yesterday installing Ubuntu 64 bit linux on it. I mean it still boots windows just fine. I added some 5 EFI boot sequences that do not do anything anymores.

I did also have issues with W7 64 bit USB 3.0 drivers on a new PC using a Intel Haswell chipset which is now old. It seems now that MS is using one USB driver for USB 2.0 and 3.0 which messed up my settings. I have had some issues with USB3.0 on Ubuntu Linux.

Used to have issues (well not recently with my USB connection to my Fine Offset with Cumulus 1). I haven't seen an issue since I have updated Cumulus 1. That said though that USB to computer connection from the Fine Offset used to be a bit fussy.

Here I utilize all Digi USB hubs. I wonder if you connected the Fine Offset USB port to a Digi powered hub if that would help you at all?

I looked at my Baytrail USB hub with one of those USB sniffers and do not really see any issues with it. Still wondering though why my NIC port gets shut off on the device.

Here utilize a Vantage Vue, Vantage Pro 2 and Fine Offset. The Fine Offset has been the problem child of the three.

Thing is though that I mounted it a bit too high and its really difficult to get to such that I do not touch it.

Here while I am using Windows 10; I am still just testing it for that warm and fuzzy and not totally sure about it yet.

I am using Embedded XP and W7 for my touchscreen clients and it works fine for me. Still consider W10 though for a new Windows touchscreen client.

I don't know if Microsoft changed something or what, but I still cannot figure this issue out. The weather station and CumulusMX both work fine in Ubuntu MATE Linux. No issues of it having erratic readings at all. I just reinstalled Windows 10 again to verify without adding any other optional peripherals and I still have this issue. It doesn't happen when I open Cumulus MX and it reads the new data since it was last opened just fine. It is during normal operation after that. It can be minutes or hours later and then out of the blue Cumulus MX gets a bad reading with impossibly low temperatures for the time of year.

I did use the Set Logger program to change my Fine Offset weather station to 1 minute intervals a long time ago and all was well. I guess I could try 5 minute intervals and see if that works, but it is just odd the same setup works fine in Linux and was working fine in Windows 7 up to a few months ago and still remained after going to Windows 10.

I am going to give Cumulus 1.9.4 1099 a try.

Those settings seemed to work, but I did have Wind Chill bottom out during the day once. This was not due to reading station data to catch up to the current time. It was while it was running normally.

I decided to try this and let the station catch up:

Letting the station catch up made numerous erratic errors of low readings.

I tried a different USB port and still the same.

I am going to get caught up again in Linux then save that data to Windows and let it run with the above settings to see if it will run fine or not.

I guess at this point it is a USB thing with Windows. I do not experience this issue at all in Ubuntu MATE, but the software I normally use requires Windows.

Well it was working fine for about 3 hours then just a couple of minutes ago...

Temperature = Low 32.2 19:02
Dew Point = Low -0.6 19:02
Wind Chill = Low 23.9 19:02

DAMNIT!

It is presently...

Temperature = 46.0
Dew Point = 8.2
Wind Chill = 40.4

So what is the difference between running Cumulus MX in Linux and Windows? The file system (EXT4 vs. NTFS) and the USB driver right? It must be a USB driver issue.

The Windows 10 driver used is:

I figured out what was going on. So far it has been about 4 days without an issue.

I have a software defined radio (RTL-SDR) which plugs in with a USB cable. I use a program called SDRSharp to listen to radio transmissions. It kind of turns the RTL-SDR into a police scanner. Pretty cool stuff actually.

When I have it and Cumulus MX both running is when I get the erratic readings. I either have to run one or the other, but not both at the same time to avoid the erratic readings issue.

In order to install the RTL-SDR to your Windows computer, you have to use a modified driver from here:

This driver can also replace the Fine Offset driver, but Cumulus will not find the weather station. I wonder though if it was supported by Cumulus if I could in fact run both.

MX uses a third party library called HIDSharp for its USB access, and it's that which would need changing to support other drivers. I don't currently have the time or the knowledge to be able to do that. It is possible that at some point I will get around to looking at trying to enhance the library, as it would be useful if it supported libudev1 as well as libudev0 on Linux, as the latter can be hard to find for some distributions. Unless someone helpfully does it first!
