USB or Serial?

Post by grapee »

Hi,

Seriously considering purchase of a bit of Davis kit but a little confused as to which data logger I should purchase with it.

Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated.

TIA Graeme

Not as much whether serial or USB but perhaps consider a WiFi. What do you wish to do and what is the priority?

Enjoy,
Paul

Thanks Paul for your response but I’m not really understanding the context of Wi-fi in relation to my question or am i missing something?

Looking at the Weather Shop order page, there are options to add Weather Link which I assume I’ll need to download to Cumulous ?

If I’ve got it all wrong, please advise, it was all very simple with my current Fine Offset kit which is over 10 years old and becoming unreliable.

Cheers
Graeme

Sounds that running PC 24/7 is fine with you (and I do the same), so USB or serial logger would work fine. However, in addition to serial and USB with USB most commonly used now, the third-party WiFiLogger can have your console away from your computer and use WiFi for communicating with Cumulus computer. The Davis Live is another option and CumulusMX does now support that as well.

Enjoy,
Paul

I use a BelfryBoy logger - at £50 plus £9 postage (worldwide), much cheaper than Davis' own.
This is a USB type (ie plugs into the Davis console and connects to your computer via a captive USB cable (which is about 2m long).
Works with CumulusMX and most other weather software.

The question Serial vs USB vs WiFi is driven by which connection type you want at the computer end.
Modern computers rarely have serial ports (unless you add an adaptor). Suggest you avoid these unless your supplier discouts it to about £5 - they are old tech.
USB connect to your computer via a USB cable - so the computer needs to be next to the Davis console. This is probably most similar to your FineOffset setup.
WiFi type would let you place the console anywhere (as long as within reach of your WiFi network), and the console anywhere else (as long as connected to your home network by WiFi or ethernet cable).

I suspect WiFi type is most versatile, but USB type much cheaper if you purchase a non-Davis version (see my other post) http://belfryboyweatherbits.blogspot.co ... ogger.html

It is 2020. Neither USB nor Serial. The answer is Davis WeatherLink Live... WiFi.

With apologies for the late response, thank you all for your valuable and interesting feedback.

Other events have taken over since I wrote this but hopefully when this global crisis is all over, I can post the new setup !

Kindest regards,

Graeme

Yes CumulusMX supports the WL Live. Just select Davis Weatherlink Live in the Station Settings.

Enjoy,
