Fire Weather - pwsFWI

Post by HansR »

A year ago I started a thread on Fire Weather, a new approach, which resulted in me writing the pwsFWI module which eventually resulted in CumulusUtils as a coherent, single tool : a complete weather dashboard.

I think pwsFWI is such crucial part of the whole of CumulusUtils, that I decide to bring the Fire Weather, a new approach subject over to the CumulusUtils sub-forum. This thread will contain any information/discussion related to pwsFWI and Fireweather in general. The original thread will stay in the general forum.

Some recent developments:
  1. I recently contacted the scientists behind the Hot-Dry-Windy Index (see my original blog) by email and they were interested. The group of scientists themselves use the theory mainly as a large scale forecasting index, while pwsFWI is an implementation on the basis of local weather station data (which I give a local validity). That difference provoked the author to ask for the analysis data for NSW / Inverell of last summer to look at it.
  2. For those interested in wildfires and with a scientific soul, there is a series of (free) webinars going on with talks on all aspects of wildfires. Recordings of the webinars are published on the PyroLife channel on YouTube. A very interesting talk was of Dr. Adrián Cardil of univ of Lleida (Spain). There are some more but not published yet, I will come back to that later. Subscription to the webinars is still possible and they run until 22 july.
  3. Please note that the region of Sangonera / Murcia is currently very Hot, Dry and sometimes Windy meaning that the pwsFWI is very high. @meteosangonera has not reported any fires yet though, but that seems a matter of time.
  4. Note that the EFFIS (European Forest Fire Information System) has great global information on the whole of Europe up to local fire level (occurrence). Note that - see image - even for England, Fire weather is an important concept.
Anyway, I'll keep you posted on developments and interesting things.

So far, no major fires have occurred.

Some attempt, but it has been quickly brought under control.

I think people in general are very aware of the fires. I hope we don't have any major fires this summer.

That is good and I agree awareness is the best possible prevention as most fires start because of human origin (mostly accidental!).
Hope it stays like this. That talk of Dr. Adrián Cardil I referenced above shows the attention is being given in Spain - with international export - to prevention and firefighting.

Thanks, keep us informed!

Would like to note two more talks of the above mentioned symposium/webinars on Youtube:
  1. Alexander Held on Vegetation Fire in non-fire-prone countries (Based in East Rhine area southern point of Black Forest)
  2. Paolo Fernandes on Extreme Wildfires in the European South (Mainly Spain/Portugal).
Both are very competent lecturers.

For the southern Hemisphere, Wednesday 8/7 talks will be on :
  1. Integrated Fire Management in Aotearoa, New Zealand Drawing on Social and Cultural Research with Rural and Rural-urban Interface Communities
  2. Aboriginal Women and Cultural Burning in NSW Australia
(see complete agenda)

Last Thursday, there were dry storms in my area at dawn.

A lightning strike caused a fire in a mountainous area about 65km from my weather station.

In total, approximately 17 hectares were burned. The fire is already extinguished.

Usually this is the kind of fire we have around here.

Firefighters manage to put them out quickly.

If lightning ignites easily than it is really dry.
You are fortunate with such vigilant fire fighters (and pilots I assume), they keeps thing in control.
Thanks for the briefing :!: :D

Great photos btw. Are they taken from firefighters planes?
And so this would be the 9th with this pwsFWI display on your station (great correspondence again between pwsFWI and actual fire risk):

As the fire season in Europe does not seem too extreme, it may be changing beginning of august as temperatures are rising. At Sangonera (@meteosangonera) the situation is getting extreme as the value of pwsFWI is running off scale (see image). Note that EFFIS uses a six scale indication level and the surroundings of Sangonera fit the value of EFFIS (remember pwsFWI is still in its first year and in behavioural test :!: ) - So meteosangonera might consider the (Australian) six scale indicator. So far no other fire reports for the Murcia surroundings have been received.

That is different for San Sebastian (@kocher) where the pwsFWI value suddenly jumped to over 400 (see image - level : High / Yellow) which is pretty extreme for San Sebastian. But only 40 km North-East of that location there is a small but very dangerous fire going on in France (Anglet, just north of Biarritz, see image). Dangerous because those 50 ha of forest are within a very populated area!

Unfortunately there is no local pwsFWI in the area in France and the Pyrenees inhibit direct use of the prediction of San Sebastian, but knowing the area and seeing the value in San Sebastian it says to me the following:
  • Where sometimes 50 km radius from a station still gives good indication, here we have the Pyrenees between San Sebastian and Anglet and the Ocean as major influence on meteorology and precipitation in that region. So the locality of pwsFWI becomes stronger.
  • pwsFWI as a local indicator has good value (Note that the original authors of the use this FWI on very large scale as a climate indicator!).

Just received an article from Phil on an early start of the fire season in New South Wales. Interesting while summer is just really taking off in Western Europe during the first half of August with draught and temperature reaching or surpassing 40 degrees (C). Especially in Spain, Italy and Greece (unfortunately there are no pwsFWI sites in the last two countries).

I would like to take opportunity to also point to a video of a lecture of Vanessa Cavanagh on Cultural burning, an Australian Aboriginal woman researcher from New South Wales a recording of one of the Webinars I referenced earlier). NOTE: 50 minutes viewing time. Interesting difference with the European views on wildfire. But I do know my neighbour in France had a similar attitude towards wildfire and fuel and practised it on small scale :)

Greetings to all

Because my area's FWI has recently been rising significantly, I would like to add the FWI icon (with current value) to my original website:

http://kocher.es

Specifically I would like to place it in the left side menu bar:

http://kocher.es/menu.php

The problem is that I don't know how I can do it. :groan:

I appreciate any help.

Thank you very much to all

Hi Javier,

Thanks, great! I assume that is a raise in stature of the pwsFWI

I created the file pwsFWIcurrent.txt for this, it is generated daily together with the pwsFWI table. It has the following content:

Code: Select all

<span style="border: 1px solid black;text-align:center;background:green;color: white"> &nbsp;138.5&nbsp;</span>
You can include the text in the normal manner and then add a link to it or do it the way of St Bonnet-Le-Troncy.
But the value and the colour are available.
If you want it handled differently, you have to work the content of the file.

Hope this helps.

(NOTE: the content is also shown right of the system LED on the Utils Website)

Good moches Hans

Thank you very much for your kind answer.

What I was not very clear about, was how to get it to update automatically when the value changes:

http://kocher.es/cumulusMX/FWI/pwsFWIcurrent.txt

http://kocher.es/menu.php

Thanks to your help, I think it works now.

Thank you very much
