error message on installation

Post by ncipq »

After following the instructions to avoid having to open with administrator rights and setting up the station, I got an error message when rebooting CumulusMX telling me to zip up and post the MXdiags folder which I have now done.

Nothing to worry about - there was some unexpected data left in the comm port buffer when MX tried to read the firmware version. I'll add some extra error handling around this.

Thanks Mark

As you will have realised, the message did not reoccur next time.

However, I have one problem and one question.

No problem with the 'tagged' pages such as index.htm updating but whilst the steelseries gauges may work for a while, they then stop. The reason is that instead of continuing to upload realtimegauges as a txt file it is uploaded as realtimegauges.txttmp. With your experience do you have any idea why only a temporary file appears on my website server or what can be done about it?

Secondly, I note that using Taskkill to close CumulusMX is a bad idea. What if I shut down Windows with CumulusMX running without remembering to shut down CumulusMX first using ctrl +c?

You should switch on debug and FTP logging in Cumulus and then take a look at the MXdiags log file and the FTP log file to get a better idea of what is going on.

Whilst killing MX is not a good idea, you can get away with most of the time. If you kill it whilst it is writing to a log file though you are asking for file corruption.

I not sure how others do it on Windows, but I just have to remember to close MX on my rPi before I reboot it.

On Windows I always use Ctrl+C, saves any files getting corrupted.

On Windows, and always Ctrl-C as David says...

Enjoy,

I believe (actually, hope!) I am right to think that it is safe to simpy use 'sudo halt' or 'sudo reboot' on a Raspberry Pi without specifically closing Cumulus MX. Both 'sudo reboot' and 'sudo halt' perform a controlled, organised closedown (that is, they ask running processes to stop rather than abruptly forcing closure). They also close down processess hat any users other than you have started (other users are sent a message like "System going down for reboot NOW")

Just pulling out the power plug is a seriously bad idea, though.

Yes, what ExperiMentor says.
And if you use the start/stop script by jank with its init.d extension there is no trouble at all.
Always wondered why that procedure (or something similar on Windows) is not part of the installation.
