Replacement for WH1080?

Post by TonyG »

My venerable WH1080 has finally expired. I've run through my stock of sensors and the transmitter which has been overhauled more than once has finally died as well.

The GW1001 looks ideal as I ran my old station through a headless Pi running CumulusMX accessed via a web browser over ethernet and so don't really need a console. I also used Cumulus to update a weather page on my website.

I'm slightly confused though as I can't make out whether I would be able to connect the GW1001 gateway to the Pi via USB. The manual suggest that the USB port is for power only. Anybody know if this is the case or not? If it is then I'm guessing I be will not be able to use CumulusMX with this station?

Has anyone any other budget suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

The GW1000 is USB powered only. It connects via WiFi. It works fine with Cumulus MX.

Thanks Mark! I've been using a cabled station ever since I started using Cumulus and CumulusMX. Is it easy to configure for a wireless only station?

You configure the GW1000 using their phone app. Once that is done, then configure Cumulus to use that station (leave the IP address blank if unknown), restart Cumulus and it will discover the station on your network (if you only have one GW1000) and start downloading the data. If auto-discovery fails, then you can set the IP address manually in the station config.

Thank you very much. Think I can cope with that. :-) This is definitely the route I will be taking.
