Remote Access to rPi.

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

Thanks for the comment,

First look on their page I see "You may need to Open a Port...."

That pretty much indicate's that it's not gonna work behind CGNAT.

I did have success with RealVNC & their Cloud service, where the host calls home & then notifies of the ports it using to get out on,
but that entails running the GUI & although I didn't initially have an issue with that, I''m starting to see that GUI, VNC & then CMX is too resource intensive for the pi3-B I intend to use.

Reverse tunnels seem to be the way, but that's still something I'm trying to understand.
So many varying examples when you are still vague on the base concept.

So current status is the Ecowitt has been installed 50km away & the rPi-3 still sits back here.

Can anyone with the Linux background tell me if this is on the right path?

Not quite sure what the CnC Server is yet, other than the Command & Control as the acronym indicates.

Is it a client on my PC receiving a forward port from the router?

Thanks

Phil.

Still weighing up solutions,

The more I think the more issues I find.

This just came to mind...
Even when I get to the point of having a shell connection & a terminal window, I still won't have access to the interface unless I can somehow get port 8998 connected to some type of relay at my end.

Does make me think I need to look at something like using OpenVPN as a client on the pi & run the VPN server on my router.
Just not sure it OpenVPN's client can make an outbound connection from behind CGNAT.

I mentioned in another VPN thread that I've found Zerotier is very easy to set up. It navigates CGNAT seamlessly. It's free. It works great on Android, Linux, iOS, Mac, Windows. I used Openvpn but then changed network providers and ran into the CGNAT dead end.

Well for the record, this remote station has been up for a week now, running the GUI & Accessible remotely via the RealVNC Cloud Service.
Haven't had a single connection issue & that includes a few Dual Session from the other side of the World...

The Fresh GUI install seem fairly light on resources & offers niceties in terms of Editors, File Managers & a Browser, without which I'd have no access to the interface without a VPN tunnel.

As it turns out the easiest workable solution was installed by default.

Cheers.

It can be used locally or via a cloud service. It is included in Raspbian, only needs to be enabled.

And it is free for private users.

I am very satisfied with this solution.
It wasn't installed on my RPi so I installed it. I don't have the gui so can't get into it. And then it's getting complex. Or am I missing something? How do I use it in commandline mode?
I am also interested of get it work with VNC cloud.
I followed the https://help.realvnc.com/hc/en-us/artic ... ection-0-3.
I can access from my lan, but it shows "Cannot currently show the desktop", I have tried to fix that also with reslolution and so on, but it will not work.

You have to run

Code: Select all

sudo raspi-config
to configure your RPi to get the VNC server to run at startup and subsequently use it :
  1. Option 1 System => option S5 Boot / Auto login:
choose either option 3 or 4 depeending on what you need
  2. Option 2 Display Options => D5 Set resolution for headless use
  3. Option 3 Interface Options => I3 Enable graphical remote access using RealVNC
That should get it working and make it possible to login from the desktop client (assuming you did make an account on RealVNC)

NOTE: and after using this now for some time, trying other options as well, I must say VNC is very satisfying and easy as it is supported (free) by Raspberry and by RealVNC.

UPDATE:
After some troubleshooting I got it work!!

Some questions, is it possible to show the dashboard for Cumulus MX? (like 192.168.1.50:8998)
And is it possible to upload files to the remote RPi?

Over the VNC Connection?
When you are connected you can certainly launch a browser on the pi & go to localhost:8998.
Viewing it on a remote PC's browser would require port forwarding & would not be secure.
And is it possible to upload files to the remote RPi?
When you have the VNC connection open there is a drop down menu accessed from the top of the screen.
It has a file transfer option.
Screenshot 2022-07-16 110522.jpg
It give the above to sent files from the remote PC to the Pi.
You can also pull them back the other way from the Pi as mentioned in the image.

I also use WinSCP to transfer both ways, but requires me identifying the Pi's public IP & temporarily opening a port then closing it when done.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

I manage to send files to my RPi with VNC.

I use also WinSCP to transfer files to my RPi. But a have one RPi at another location, thats why I want to use VNC.
