Ecowitt Last Rainfall Error

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

Ecowitt Last Rainfall Error

Post by The Dalek Hunter »

I have two instances of CMX running - both the latest versions.
One is running on a Windows 10 Micro PC being fed bay a Davis WLL and a Vantage Pro 2 here -

https://longsuttonweather.co.uk

And another running on a Raspberry Pi 4B fed by an Ecowitt GW1000B here -

https://longsuttonweather.co.uk/ecowitt/

It has been raining here today but the last rainfall is stuck on the 15th May for the Ecowitt but reading correctly on the Davis one.

All I can think is that you have the rain tip threshold set differently on in Ecowitt CMX configuration.

The last rain date/time is set by comparing the current total from the station against the last and if it is greater than the threshold record the date/time.

Both the WLL and GW1000 use a common bit of code to record that date.

Ah!

I have had the Davis CMX running for a while - it is a Davis WLL and A Vantage Pro 2 and I remember changing something in cumulus.ini to get the correct last rainfall correct when I set it up (but I can't remember what!!)

When I set up the Ecowitt Station I simply copied the entire CumulusMX folder from the Windows Machine to the Raspberry Pi and used the Admin interface to change from the Davis Station to the Ecowitt one and restarted CMX.

Would it be better if I deleted the cumulus.ini file on the Ecowitt Station and reentered all the config settings from scratch ?

Ok - as a follow up I stopped CMX on the Ecowitt Station - copied the entire CMX folder from the Davis Station across and deleted the Cumulus.ini.
I restarted the Ecowitt CMX and added all the setting back in via the admin interface.

So both stations are now synchronised with the Ecowitt version having a totally new cumulus.ini file - I will see when it next rains!

What is the rain tip size on your Ecowitt?

Sorry - being very stupid where will I find this info - the rain collector came from Amazon USA (I live in the UK) - the manual says Rain Volume Resolution is 0.1mm/0.01inch

0.1 mm actually equals 0.004 inches.

The default tip threshold used by Cumulus for non-Davis or Instromet stations is 0.09mm or 0.009 inches.

So you would be OK with metric units.

It depends on if the Ecowitt has two bucket sizes, a metric version and an imperial version? Or if it just converts the metric value to imperial.

I can find no mention of different bucket sizes!!

So do I just leave things alone and wait for it to rain again?

Yeah, that is all you can do for now.

I'm pretty sure all the Ecowitt tippers will be 0.1mm, and the API reports in 0.1 mm so I would have thought the current thresholds should be good.

It rained here yesterday for the first time in a while and the Last Rainfall on my Ecowitt Station has not altered. It did on the Davis Station

Ecowitt - https://longsuttonweather.co.uk/ecowitt/

Davis - https://longsuttonweather.co.uk

The Ecowitt Station acknowledges it has rained!

You will note from previous posts in this thread that the Ecowitt Station was set up on the 25th May by copying over all the data from the Davis Station but deleting the Cumulus.ini and setting it up again via the admin interface.

Doh! I just went over the maths again.

If your Ecowitt has a 0.1mm rain tipper but you are using inches, then the threshold will be set to 0.009 inches, but 0.1mm = 0.0039in so it would take 3 tips to register as "last rained" :bash:

I'll fix this for the next release.
