What does "Update forecast hourly" setting do?

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

What does "Update forecast hourly" setting do?

Post by galfert »

Under Station Settings / Forecast, what does the Update forecast hourly setting do?
The description reads: If using the Cumulus forecast, update only once an hour

Questions:
What is a Forecast as far as this feature is concerned?
Where does it come from?
Where do you see this "Forecast" in Cumulus MX?
Does it matter what kind of station you have? If yes does it apply to Ecowitt GW1000? Or is this a Davis only feature?
I don't understand this hourly update enable/disable because if you dont enable it does this mean it defaults to a daily forecast? Or is there then no forecast if hourly is disabled? There is no inference as to what does or doesn't happen if disabled.

It updates at a quicker rate unless you set it to update once an hour.

It's using your own data to create a rough forecast for your location, so it doesn't matter what station you're using.

You can see the forecast on main dashboard page.

Both my Ecowitt and Davis dashboards are showing 'Settled fine'

The Davis forecast is different, it's coming from the console. If you own a Davis station, then <#forecast> will output that info. <#cumulusforecast> will give the zambretti forecast generated by CMX and your station data.

Thank you for that explanation.

One more question:
Why is this an option? Why would anyone want to slow down the forecast to once a hour?

Because the real expectation as to upcoming changes in the weather (ie, the forecast) does not change minute-by-minute. So Cumulus offers to update it less often for greater stability / less bouncing around.
