Crashed Cumulus

Post by Kafinater »

Suddenly....my Cumulus software isn't working! It doesn't shut off using the X in the top right so I have use the task manager!
I've rebooted the computer, opened and closed the software but all it reads is the pressure, everything else is on zero, and the error light is flashing. When I click the error light it just "pings"

Any ideas anyone?

It's trying to tell you that your station isn't responding and you need to reset it (remove batteries and USB cable) but for some reason the alert is hidden, hence the non-responsiveness of the main window.

I just wanted to add that I am also seeing the same problem as Kafinater. I am, as he is, running a Fine Offset station with Windows 7 as my OS. Pulling the console cable, batteries, and restarting Cumulus is the only way to get things going again. My Diag log also has a 'Station not responding' error and there is a error present in the lower left corner of the Cumulus page.

I had not seen this error while I was running Cumulus 1.9.2. It was not until after I upgraded to 1.9.3 that this starting appearing. On average it will happen about once a week.

It sounds like you too are getting the well known Fine offset 'USB lockup' problem. Have you tried the 'synchronisation' setting? See "Synchronise Fine Offset Reads" in the station settings.

I am not aware of any changes that I did in 1.9.3 that could cause the USB lockup problem to happen more often. But as it's timing related then any unrelated changes could have changed the timing such that it does happen more often, I suppose. But anyway, the synchronisation setting seems to prevent it happening.

I really don't think the problem is with the software. I had been running 1.9.2 since release with no problems. I suspect the issue is with the console. A couple of weeks before I upgraded to 1.9.3 I had to replace the console due to the barometer failing. After I replaced the console is when I started seeing the USB lockup. It's probably just bad luck that this console is acting up when the other didn't. I'll try your suggestion and is if that fixes it.

Hey, maybe this is the final argument that I can use to get my wife to let me upgrade to something better than a Fine Offset system...

The problem occurs with 'later' consoles (I don't know exactly when), so your original console was presumably OK, but the replacement has the issue.
