FTP timed out

Post by profzarkov »

Hi
My station stopped uploading to my webpage at 0030 last night.
It's still uploading to Weather Underground.
I tried Filezilla and it works . . .

I use 1and1 - now called Ionos as my host.

I see they use SFTP . . .not sure I can configure Cumulus around this....any help.

Yes, MX handles SFTP but Cumulus 1 doesn't.

If you know which files Cumulus uploads to your site then you could configure an FTP client to upload the files using sftp.
I do that to upload my weather cam pics to my website. I use FlashFXP (free version) to schedule an upload every 15 mins 24/7, it will even wake up the pc to do it, although that mini .pc runs 24/7 for my weather station. Been running like that for a couple of years, the free version of FlashFXP https://www.flashfxp.com/ seems very good and reliable.

Sorry my english. I am from germany...

I think I have a similar problem.
I am using the FTP-Function of Cumulus to upload a Gif-File created from a Meteosat-Receiving-Station to my website. It is also possible to let create a AVI-File but Cumulus get an Error-Code 426 when upload the AVI-File. Gif is already running but not a reasonable solution.
Switching between active and passive mode is not successful.

Log-File from Cumulus (excerpt):

Images are best uploaded using the "binary" option on the upload file, but in your case it may be that .avi file is too large as they are usually complete video files, which tend to be on the large size. The server is timing out as the upload is taking too long.

I have made a test and let create a avi-file wich is smaller than the gif. the problem is the same.
It seems that the FTP-Client in the Cumulus-Software blocks avi-files.
I have enabled/disabled UTF-8/Binary etc... nothing happens. I am clueless.

It is very unlikely the CumulsMX blocks .avi files, but more likely that your hosting service does. Try changing the .avi file as a .txt with binary set and then rename it as .avi using the remote file name i.e. local file "something\myfile.txt!", remote file "something\myfile.avi". If that doesn't work you will need to speak to your hosting service technical support and find out if there are any limitations to using Ftp.

By the way how big is the ,avi file?

That's not so easy with renaming the file because it is a automated Process between several programs.
The Sat-Receiving-Software decodes Data and stores the Images in jpg to HDD. The MSG-Animator takes the last 24 Pictures (6h) and makes an animated Gif or Avi-File.
This File should be uploaded with the Weather-Station-Data to my website. This complete process repeats every 15min. The Realtime.txt is uploaded every 30secs.
With gif this process works fine but not with avi.
I dont like to use a different program for that task because the PC is busy enough with decoding the Data from the Satellite.

The Gif-File is 6.75MB (6h - 24 Frames)
The AVI is little more than 10.9MB (6h - 24 Frames)
The Test-AVI was 5.4MB (3h - 12 Frames - smaller than the original Gif-File)

btw. the System uses Cumulus 1...

---

The reason why I would like to use AVI is:
The MSG-Manager causes sometimes a 'Access-Violation' on the OS by creating a new Gif-Animation and will be terminated.
The Programmer of the Software told me to use AVI because it is running smoother.

So I have 2 possibilities.
1. Using Gif and look every morning if the MSG-Animator is still running or...
2. Get Cumulus running to upload AVI-Files.

Problem resolved...

The Problem was that the FTP-Protokoll not exactly says what the Problem is... Read-Error.
The AVI-File of the MSG-Animator is locked during Playback so the FTP-Client cannot upload the File. Gif is already running so I have to use the Gif-File. I think it is also more common for Websites.
I can not understand why the File is 'fully' locked during Playback.Write protection would be sufficient. That must be a mistake of the Programmer of the MSG-Software.
