Cumulus Support

I am using Cumulus 1.9.4 on a Windows 8.1 computer.

Yesterday (1 February) I noticed that when I looked at View\This year, only displayed data for February. I then used the period 1 January to 28 February to display the View\This period and the same happened, only data for February was displayed.

However, when I used the Views\Highs and Lows\This year, the data for January and February was displayed, as it should be.

This morning I noticed the dayfile.txt is only listing data for 1 February 2018 and all my previous data, back to 7 January 2014, is missing.

Can somebody please tell me what might have happened and, more importantly, how to retrieve all the data in my dayfile.txt file?

Have you looked at dayfile.txt with a good text editor to see what’s actually in there? There may just be some kind of corruption on one line.

Cumulus does take copies of dayfile.txt daily and when it starts up, in the backup hierarchy. These are not intended for data security purposes (despite the name) and are not a substitute for a proper backup regime.

As a last resort, the dayfile.txt editor in Cumulus can rebuild dayfile.txt (or a reasonable approximation) using the monthly log files (“create missing”, see the help).

Yes, I was looking at the Dayfile.txt file in Notepad.

I looked in the back-up hierarchy but the latest Dayfile.txt was for 22 January, which was complete up to that date. Should there have been a later versions there?

I did the rebuild Dayfile.txt option and this appears to have worked - so many thanks.

Now to find out what caused the problem in the first place. I read in one of your help files (before making my post) that if some corrupt data is received from the weather station (Davis Vantage Pro2 Plus in my case), it can cause a problem in the Dayfile.txt file. In November 2017 I noticed the rain rate was 1645.8 mm/hr at 0208 on the 23rd, which was an all-time record. Although it did rain during the night, it never woke me, like it would probably have done if it had rained at that rate. Could this have been the cause?

Incorrect data readings wouldn't cause data to be deleted from dayfile.txt, nor would anything else have caused Cumulus to delete data. It must have been something else, impossible to say what.

Thanks again Steve. Would you agree the rain rate reading of 1645.8 mm/hr at 0208 on the 23 November is wrong? If so, what is the best way for me to correct it, please?

It may be correct if you had a moderate amount of rain in a very short time,which it appears you did, due to the way the Davis determines rainfall rate (time between tips).

If you lived in the tropics I’d accept that’s a possible reading. But in nearly nine years my highest is 10.75”/hr. Or 261mm/hr. Yours is over 7 times higher and in November when heavy downpours are rare.

Use the editor to remove it. It’s been a while since I last used it but you should be able to find help on how to remove bad records.

Having driven 300 miles today I’m far too tired to do the calculation, but I think that recorded rate only requires two tips a second apart. I’ll concede that it also may have been a glitch
