No go After Windows 10 update

Post by Harp32 »

Running 1.9.4. and Weatherwise equipment. (WH1080)
Was working great with Windows 8.1 then I up graded to Windows 10 and the computer will not talk to the USB connected Weatherwise equipment.
It is like Windows will not give me a comm port.
(Just as a check it plugged the equipment into a Windows XP box and everything works fine.)
Must have something to do with Windows 10 and USB assignments and comm ports.
Help!...Thanks

I don't recall anyone having that particular problem after a Windows 10 upgrade - Windows not detecting the Fine Offset console at all. There are other potential issues after a Windows 10 upgrade, but usually the station is actually detected in the first place. What is Cumulus saying - Fine Offset station not found?

you could see if it is listed in Powershell perhaps?

Code: Select all

Get-WmiObject Win32_USBControllerDevice | Foreach-Object { [Wmi]$_.Dependent }

If rebooting, remove and replug station doesn't work, try removing all of the USB devices and let windows find them again.

Turned computer off.
Unplugged all USB plugs.
Turned computer on and after boot up I plugged in the weather station....Computer dings but will not hear the data from WeatherWise into Cumulus.
Plugged in the rest of the stuff (mouse, keyboard etc.) and it all worked.
Is it time for a new weather station?...lol

I meant to uninstall the actual device drivers from controlPanel/devices. It does sound more like the Weather station is the problem. The only problem I have had with communication to a weather station is that the soldering of the USB socket was Crap! Does the socket move at all if you wiggle the cable where it connects to the USB socket?
You could try another weather station (unlikely) or another computer (possible). Isolate the problem.

If Windows 10 is making a sound when it's plugged in, it's odd that it won't make it available to Cumulus. Does it appear in the USB devices list - have you tried that powershell command suggested above?

What do you see when you go into device manager and look at the USB section? Does it identify the station correctly or say unknown device? One solution for problems like this is to have Windows try to update the drivers for the generic USB hub and for the USB device. You can do that in Device Manager in Control Panel.

Sets up a "USB input device".
I removed it and unplugged the weather station. Plugged it back in and it setup a "USB input device" again.
Cumuls says......"7/10/2016 9:30:38 AM : Fine Offset station not found! - check connections and restart Cumulus"
Guess I am about to give up on it.

Have you tried running the Fie Offset Station with Easy Weather since you upgraded to Windows 10? If Easy Weather won't communicate either then it is probably a driver or a hardware issue. I would also try downloading and installing the latest version of Easy Weather. That might update the driver.

Fine Offset stations are notorious for having USB port lockups. I used to have at Fine Offset (branded by Ambient) and mine would lock up at least once a month. You have to unplug from the PC and remove the batteries to get it to reset. I would try that if you haven't.

After a clean Windows 10 Pro 1803 install, rock stable PC and everything working fine including all my other USB things plugged in at the same time, my Fine Offset WH1081 (lacks the Radio Controlled Clock RCC of the WH1080) has had 2 USB lockups within 2 days and I'm starting to get rather annoyed with it...

Also, given the additional lack of UV and Solar data that it doesn't have compared to other more full featured weather stations, I also think it's time for an new weather station if the USB lockups continue!

Best Regards,
Alistair G.

Have you enabled the synchronised reads option for your Fine Offset?
