Yes, you have one month to roll the computer back to the previous operating system. Don't delete the hidden windows.old folder!

@Beteljuice you've XP so you cannot update for free to win 10 and I hate the term app too they are just programms so Cumulus is a app

I still use windows live mail not sure it was on XP and WSFTP 95 an ftp-programm uh app (used it on windows 95 and stil works)

I have absolutely no intention of switching any of my home computers from Win 7 to Win 10. It has nothing I need and you lose control over updates. Also, I'm a firm believer in the saying "there's no such thing as a free lunch".

Cumulus is still running on a 6 year-old Samsung netbook running XP and VirtualVP and is doing a wonderful job. That's its sole job so I have no concerns about internet security. That's handled by the router firewall.

The beteljuices old tower is XP and slowly choking on updates eg. java which it can't use.

The Lady beteljuices old laptop is running Win 7 - if both machines grind to a halt It will be time to retire to a desert island beach bar methinks

Guess I wont be downloading it - it says you need a Windows product Key

My Pc came with it pre-installed - I have no cd and no sticker on the tower

Are these accessible by any other means ?

Who built the PC for you? If a company they will have used an OEM generic install so the product key shown in Computer - System Properties (down at the bottom) will include OEM in the key. That isn't your actual key. It should be on a sticker on the back of the case. If they didn't attach one they they're culpable but proving it may be difficult.

I was sorting out a friend's laptop and the product key label was on it's base. It had become unreadable because of being on people's laps but neither Acer or Microsoft could help. In the end I had to reinstall Windows from the hidden partition so didn't need it but that piece of paper is absolutely essential and whoever sold it to you should have provided it.

They should have given you a product key somewhere are you sure it is not in your documentation that came with the computer?

I tried Magic Jelly Bean with my mate's laptop but it wouldn't show the actual key. That link you provided states on one of them ...

It does have the restriction that it does not work for Microsoft volume licenses in Windows 7 and 8 or certain OEM keys.

It will work on a full Windows 7 licence but if the PC was bought from a supplier it will have an OEM licence. Reason? They're cheaper and quicker to install in bulk.

I cannot emphasise enough how important it is to write that key down and keep it somewhere safe. It's outrageous that it's only supplied on a tiny label with even smaller type. Microsoft can be very stupid at times.

Great have a look in Settings -> Updates find how updates are delivered, Microsoft has enabled by default to share updates over the internet (a sort of peer to peer distubution) I've set this to off you can set it to local only but I don't want to give my bandwith to the whole internet

That sounds a bit odd - will check on that. I would have thought by security software would have stopped anything like that ?

For anyone else reading - I didnt need my Windows Product ID/Key at all

PS - now checked what you suggest but cant find the section you mentioned, nothing obvious ?
