Senior moment with Raspberry Pi and FTP settings!

Topics about the Beta trials up to Build 3043, the last build by Cumulus's founder Steve Loft. It was by this time way out of Beta but Steve wanted to keep it that way until he made a decision on his and Cumulus's future.

Senior moment with Raspberry Pi and FTP settings!

Post by philpugh »

I run CumulusMX 3031 (CMX) on a Raspberry Pi 2. It has been running apparently without any outward signs of issues for several weeks. However: recently I did a quick spring clean of the Vantage Vue ISS by turning off the DAVIS console (no AC or battery power) before dismantling bits of the ISS. When I restarted the Console I thought I would check the diagnostics on CMX.

Yes it had detected the loss of data but had carried on and picked up as soon as the console came back - well done Steve!

However I noticed there were many messages regarding failure to connect to the FTP server cropping up every 5 mins - the update time I have - throughout the log. I thought this was strange as I am not using FTP as my webserver is also on the same RasbPi.

Now when I set this up it wouldn't let me use a blank destination in the FTP/Web hostname etc so I had simply put 127.0.0.1 and set the user name and password to the one I use to access the RasbPi. CMX FTP was objecting to this as the RasbPi doesn't have FTP installed - and I would rather leave it off. So....

I double checked all my settings in Extra Web files and non had FTP set - so I unchecked the AutoUpdate box in Web/FTP settings - this cured the FTP message - but seemed to prevent the .json files being produced every 5 mins - so I had to recheck it. To get over the FTP error in the log I had to set the FTP destination to my ISP FTP server - which at least reduces the data in the log file, but is not the solution I need

I have obviously missed something simple! What should I be doing to stop it trying to FTP things please?

Just leave the host blank. I did this myself for a test yesterday and it works, so I don't know why it wouldn't let you leave it blank. You might find that it still attempts to connect to localhost until you restart, I think the check I do on whether the host is blank doesn't catch it until it's been read from cumulus.ini - there are a number of ways that a blank field can manifest itself.

Thanks for the quick reply Steve.

The restart did it - I had tried blanking the Host name - but it had complained about a blank name but I had not restarted it - silly mistake to make.

The not letting me blank it out was the fact that you can't have an empty port number in the FTP setting. I had tried taking the name out - CMX spotted this and complained so I had tried taking everything out - and lit up the options red on the console with complaints about not being able to have no port number. However I hadn't done any restart - that was the trick - I should have remembered that - thanks again

I've changed the code so that it now caters for a blank host name when it's just been set, as well as when read from cumulus.ini.
