Wiki page(s) for deletion

Please use this Forum to make suggestions for the future updates additions and general maintenance of the Wiki. Since I am sure most of these will be valid suggestions, so as they are completed in the Wiki the Topic will be deleted from this Forum, and this will act as reminder to anyone updating the Wiki of the jobs still to be done.

Wiki page(s) for deletion

Post by sfws »

I have started a new topic, that maybe others will contribute to in the future.

Having now largely caught up with the vast number of MX releases and changes required to update the Wiki to get it up to date with latest MX release, I have been looking at some of the "Special pages" reports to see what Wiki pages I might have missed out on updating. I have discovered (and where possible resolved) a few faulty links and found some pages where someone has created two with very slightly different titles or whatever. A typical problem is getting the upper/lower case different and ending up with two pages

One example of two Wiki pages created with very slightly different titles, the earlier one was created at 00:11, 2 April 2020‎ and should be deleted, while the one created at 01:37, 2 April 2020‎ with the contents of the first repeated, (and then more added in several subsequent edits) should be kept.

To be specific keep https://cumuluswiki.org/a/CumulusMX_and ... l_Websites
Please can administrator delete https://cumuluswiki.org/a/CumulusMX_and ... e_Websites

Do we need to keep pages like "Webtag" that simply redirects to "Webtags" ? There are probably other abandoned pages like that, some have redirects, some do not.

Here is an example of getting the upper/lower case different and ending up with two pages https://cumuluswiki.org/a/CumulusWiki:About (I don't have ability to edit that page) links to https://cumuluswiki.org/a/About_cumulus, but should link to https://cumuluswiki.org/a/About_Cumulus. If that change is made, then there will be another page to delete!

Yes, sfws, good work, good point! How is the wiki working anyway. It's always been a riddle to me.

It is now July, and it appears no action has been taken following the first post in this topic

I have now noticed that several pages exist that relate to log files and simply redirect to another page
E.g. ftplog redirects to ftplog.txt Given the ability to search there is no benefit in having the old page, plus it slows you down because when you see pages listed in a search you don't know which one to pick!

The other problem with all these is if you try to add a new link you can easily link to the wrong page, plus it makes the list of pages shown when you try to enter a link longer than it needs to be.

I just took a look at the first page you mentioned, and it was deleted on 20/05/2020.

I thought that if you had a login to the wiki you could delete, add and edit anything. Perhaps I'm incorrect on this point?

So it was. The one specific "Admin delete this" was deleted by somebody.

But all the other duplicates and links to wrong pages remain as described in that first post. The wiki remains desperate for more TLC and my preceding post is still valid bar that one page.

There are links https://cumuluswiki.org/a/Special:WantedPages to several pages (including for Cumulus 2), that don't actually exist.

Let me give another example. D A Jamieson took a major role in the Wiki setting up, and from time to time he was able to spare some time for updating the Wiki. While MX was in beta, he started, but never finished, labelling wiki pages as either only relevant to Cumulus 1 or only for MX. So a number of pages were linked by DAJ to category Cumulus 1. That category does not exist, but I cannot edit it out of the pages where links exist.

When Mr Jamieson started (he never finished it) on that categorisation MX was in beta and it was okay having separate pages for the very limited functionality in MX. Now it is easier to cover both Cumulus 1 and MX in most pages, using his badges to identify the few places where there are differences, but all those pages still are declared as being in category "Cumulus 1".

You probably can delete, add, or edit anything in Wiki. I cannot.

See https://cumuluswiki.org/a/Special:ListGrants for what rights can be individually granted.

Some pages are protected https://cumuluswiki.org/a/Special:ProtectedPages For instance https://cumuluswiki.org/a/Webtag is protected, that is one of the pages that my first post asked if someone could delete it.
Consequently, my edits are on https://cumuluswiki.org/a/Webtags which is not protected.

Another problem is where a page is created by someone with more rights, e.g. https://cumuluswiki.org/a/User_Contributions, I cannot delete that. Instead, I created https://cumuluswiki.org/a/Category:User_Contributions which I can edit and others can both link to, and edit, when they need to.
