The current rain 'Gauge' value

Topics about the Beta trials up to Build 3043, the last build by Cumulus's founder Steve Loft. It was by this time way out of Beta but Steve wanted to keep it that way until he made a decision on his and Cumulus's future.

The current rain 'Gauge' value

Post by KD7YZ »

I am looking at my Davis VP2 and it says 'Daily Rain' 0.69.
I just measured the NOAA rain-bucket and got the same.
So my CumulusMX gauge says .55

I know that which is in the bucket was zeroed out at 0600 local time.
CumulusMX is set to 0900 local time.

I suddenly got to wondering when I call the weather service and report rain if I'd better make sure I never look at MX and only use the Davis since the weather service knows I change over at 0600.

Any other Co-Op-OBS have any suggestions?

I don’t really follow what you’re saying, but if you are reporting daily rainfall to somewhere that requires the figure from 0600 to 0600, clearly you can’t use the daily figure reported by Cumulus (unless you set your clocks artificially) as that only has settings for 0000 and 0900.

But I thought the Davis console only measures midnight to midnight, so you can’t use that either?

Well Steve, that's a good point.
Frankly I'd been changing over at 0600 for so long that I'd not considered the point the VP2 PRO logs midnight to midnight.

And I couldn't find a setting in config ... none seen in a hasty search,

I'll defer to you and thus set MX to toggle at midnight.

At the very least, MX rainfall and VP2 will concur

thanks

I am not familiar with NOAA Observer but do report to CoCoRaHS every morning using their approved 4" gauge. CoCoRaHS don't want us to use automatic station data. I presume for accuracy by manual reading (and thawing of snow for SWE) as well as the time period issue with automatic station. My standard reporting time is 9:00 am but that can be changed if the actual reading is before or after that time so they get an actual ongoing precipitation amount. And for me there is sometimes a considerable difference between CoCoRaHS manual and Davis automatic - Davis mostly lower.

Enjoy,
Paul

regarding the Davis rain measuring, I have, awaiting non-rainy days, my second replacement rain-diodes.

I see I am back to "spot-on" measurements and >20% off .... usually lower

last year in Summer, I replaced them .. the measurements were thereafter perfect. About two months ago they were wobbling about

I've tried using "Set". dozens of times and where I am absolutely certain how much precip there was after the previous "Set"
