Dayfile Min Temp / Time wrong

Topics about the Beta trials up to Build 3043, the last build by Cumulus's founder Steve Loft. It was by this time way out of Beta but Steve wanted to keep it that way until he made a decision on his and Cumulus's future.

There seems to be a problem with the station, or the USB connection:

But the fact that it happened just after Cumulus was doing the 'synchronisation' thing is possibly relevant. Is it happening at the same time every day?

Hi Steve, yes it appears to be the same time every day... I will let run tonight and see what it does tomorrow

To see if it's related to the Synchronisation somehow, you could try turning that off for a while to see what happens. You could also try shifting the time that it happens, by stopping Cumulus at about 15:30 and starting it up again an hour or two later, to see if the time of the problem moves with it.

Hi Steve.

Restarted CumulusMX without data just before midnight, at 23:40 updating CWOP then all turns to custard for about a minute.

Next day shutdown MX, re-instated/merged & cleaned up old data files with incorrect min temp.

This morning still have sync issues at 23:40 and incorrect min temp

Cheers Warren

That seems to confirm that it's related to the synchronisation code. But others are using it without this problem, and I ran MX for months with my Fine Offset without this problem. During synchronisation, it reads every half a second rather than the usual 10 seconds. Perhaps that causes a problem with the USB interface on your system for some reason. Is this on a Raspberry Pi? You could try turning sync off, for now at least.

Yes it is, turning off the sync appears to have worked for now.

Thanks

Thanks - I'll have a look at the sync code, but I'm pretty sure that the only difference is that it reads every half a second instead of every 10 seconds. I don't know why that would cause a problem; I'm not aware of anyone else having experienced this.

One thought, is your RPi firmware (and OS) up to date, the USB handling was flaky in earlier versions.

Hi Mark

Yes the Pi is all up-to-date.

One other thought, although I have it set as a Fine Offset, it is it fact a rebadged Aercus Instruments WS1093.
Shouldn't make any difference.

How is the station connected to the Pi - directly, or via a hub (powered or not?)?

Directly, the pi is headless and is serviced by ssh.

I've asked this question before, but no-one seems to know - does the original Pi USB port reliably supply enough power for the console?

I would doubt it. Until the Raspberry Pi B+ they always advised everyone to run USB items on a power hub. Not only did the original PI not produce enough power for most USB devices, but it also suffered with power fluctuations. Only after the B+ did they solve that problem but they still even with the Raspberry 2 advise a powered hub if you are running power hungry devices such as a hard disk drive.

I'm not sure that the console draws power from the USB as it powered on board by batteries or an external power supply.
