Hi,
Is there a (RPI) linux expert that could explain the best way to install CumulusMX on an external drive of a RPi ?
Thanks

Just unzip the CumuluxMX.zip file where ever you want it to be.
For example, my external drive (hard disk) is mounted as /cumulus so I just run the following commands:
cd /cumulus
unzip <path to cumulus zip file>
This will create the CumulusMXDist directory containing all of the files, just follow the commands in the original CumuluxMX post to execute it.
The <path to cumulus zip file> points to where ever you downloaded the zip file too. Unless you've created a new user, then the zip file is probably in /home/pi.

I'm running mine on a 32gb Class10 MicroSDHC. I have it backed up daily. Do you think a USB spinning drive would be wise? (Or perhaps a small 64gb 2.5" SSD in a enclosure..). I'm concerned for corruption. This is my first Pi.

Re: Install CMX on RPI's external drive
When I started using a rpi I got SD card corruptions regularly, and almost every time I accidentally powered it down. Since I moved everything (apart from the /boot partition) to a small HDD it has been fine (touch wood ). Now there may have also been improvements in the OS and firmware during that time too which have helped - I have the original model A and B, the firmware has improved a lot since then.
If I were setting it up now I'd go with a small SSD in a USB enclosure, reliable and low power.

I doubt it, I'd go with I powered hub. Pi hut do one that has the'back power' disconnected which is what you want so you can power off the RPI independently.

Thanks for that, just trying to have a way to save data in case of power cuts. I have the CW2 UPS but if using a hub then lose the ability to safely save datamcrossley wrote:I doubt it, I'd go with I powered hub.
