I wonder why I have started to get these anomalous readings from the console all of a sudden. Did I read that you now don't use the Davis DLL - or did I dream that one? If so, maybe the Davis DLL filters oddities out.

No, it doesn't use the DLL, it reads the values directly from the serial data (which includes a CRC check).

I've realised that I've had MX set to calculate the average for a while now, so I've switched over to the console average to see if I get anything odd. Even though I'm (hopefully) filtering them out now, I've put a log message in when it does it.

I have been using the console average all the time and haven't seen anything unusual. What firmware version are you on Adrian- not that it may be significant. I'm running 3.12 with a 'real' serial connection.

Hi Mark, I'm on 3.12 as well (had to find the {sotto voce} m a n u a l to find out the version). I'm using a 3 metre USB cable in serial mode - which is probably most likely to be the problem. Odd it should just start now though. Probably coincidence.

I just installed build 3015. I noted that you had put code in to set the clock so I thought I would test it by setting the console clock wrong by a minutes or so and then stop and start Cumulus to see if it set the clock - it did!

However, while I fiddled with the console I left Cumulus running. When I exited setup mode on the console it took a few seconds to sync with the ISS/Anemometer and during this time showed the wind speed as --- on the console. I spotted the UI saying the wind speed was 400 odd kph during this time and, looking in the logs for your debugging that you said you were going to put in, there it was:

So, it looks like the 255 mph is caused by the console doing its "resync thing" which very occasionally mine does. 255 must mean --- i.e. no data.

Unfortunately, as you will see, Cumulus has already logged the 255 as a monthly record before it ignores the 255.

It's because this one is the current speed rather than the average as it had been previously, so I wasn't paying attention to the fact that I also read the current wind speed from the LOOP2 packet (might as well while we're processing that instead of the LOOP packet). I need to put the same check in the LOOP2 code - just for the current speed as the average isn't in there.

The nice thing about setting the clock using the serial protocol directly is that it can be set to the second, unlike with the DLL which only does it to the minute.

Were you saying that this happens when the Davis console is trying to resync? I looked at the console but didn't even think to look for the R in the bottom right to see if that's what it was. I restarted the program on my Pi and it seems ok ever since. Just a bit alarming since it was the first time I'd seen it.

Could that be due to a resync? I mean it's likely it may have always done this during a resync, I just never turn debug logging on. Can't remember why I did now.

It could be - yes. I guess if it hadn't had 10 minutes of consecutive wind readings, it couldn't do the average calculation correctly.

Well, it did it a couple of times over the last two days. I'm finding out it does it for about five minutes then things seem ok again. This time the wind was pretty good for this. Like I said though, it may well have always been doing this, but I never had debug logging turned on very often. It always starts after the message that it can't read loop data. I wish I could catch it when it does it and see if the console is in the middle of a resync. I average about four of those resyncs a day; not sure why I don't see them more often. Oh well, I'll stop worrying about it.
