Hi
As I said - the capacitor is against all reasoning BUT I've had a little rain and had three separate ON/OFF pairs in the debug log.

Alan,

I finished my setup in test mode so for now its just a DTR/DSR connection to pins 4 and 6 from COM and NO on the digital rain guage.

The set up is easy to change over to using the capacitor.

We are having a sort of drought so will test this afternoon while watering the outdoor plants.

Its a bit different topology on the connectivity using a Quatech serial to IP server. I am currently utilizing a different Quatech serial IP server for the serial port connection to the Davis Vantage Vue.

Looking at the forecast for Oban it should not be long to wait ;)

not sure were you are getting your forcast from but the met office forcasts has been so wrong on tuesday up in the 20's 20 miles up the road down pours. fortwilliam never stopped raining all day.

cumulus forcast is sort of right most of the time but the layout of hills and everything else its more look out the window.

so wait and see would like some proper readings to compair

no rain over night in oban

the issue of clearing the recorded rain in the today file. as there had been no rain i was able to move the notebook and cables to make it a bit neater as its set up in the bedroom. i cleared the log and started cumulus and both the today and yesturday figures were as expected 0.00 in both. the found i had not connected the rs232 port. so pluged it in and got a reading in the today rate 0.3

shut down cumulus cleared the log and restarted with the cable connected and still got 0.3

so shut down again got meter out to check for a short on the reed nothing. restarted reading of 0.3 again so restarted reading 0.6 tried a few more time each time on restarting the rate increased by 0.3

anyone any ideas as to what could be causing the false readings on start up?

With push button connected instead of RG11, no rain recorded at start-up.

I suspect that you are getting a 'DSR on' indication at startup for some reason. If you edit cumulus.ini and add 'logging=1' to the [Station] section, it will run on the debug log at startup, and we can see if that's happening.

I've made some other test with my push button!
Button pressed for 2-3 seconds and then released for 2-3 s and so on.

Yes, I thought that must be the explanation.

Yes - and it's odd how there can be two or more 'on's without an 'off', and vice versa. It's just as well that real sensors seem to work better than this test!

Hi
I found that the length of the switch closure caused multiple ON/OFF's and it is difficult to time the switch so I would expect that sort of result.
There is a thread somewhere about USB/Serial adapters - one version of the firmware seems more reliable than the other.

Oh for a good old fashioned physical serial port (or even a parallel port!) eh?
