I always use Computer Manuals for books as they are so much cheaper.

For instance "JavaScript & jQuery the missing manual " is £19.99 with free delivery (as are all manuals delivered in UK)
http://www.computermanuals.co.uk/script ... ref=233577 , and they stock almost every book you can ask for. You can even pre-order 5th Edition of "Java scripts in easy steps" for £8.99. http://www.computermanuals.co.uk/script ... ref=307484

Very good place to order computer books and delivery is excellent, super fast.

Thanks David. The books in the library are all very old and out of date, so some new books it is! Would you recommend
http://www.computermanuals.co.uk/script ... =&x=40&y=9 as a good HTML primer. I've gathered up some cash, so I'm about to order the 1st two you mentioned.

Reading snippets from web pages is no substitute for a real book.

No problem Andrew,

Yes that is a good as any for HTML. If you wanting to learn the entire subject of web design you might also need a CSS book and this one CSS Cookbook http://www.computermanuals.co.uk/script ... ref=122139 is very good.

I ended up buying "HTML5 in easy steps" http://www.computermanuals.co.uk/script ... &x=61&y=14 rather than the "HTML In Easy Steps 6th Edition" you are considering, for reasons I put in my earlier post in this topic - HTML5 is looking to future (has better video and audio and other 'object' handling), HTML4 (in latter book) is looking to past. You do say:

I've ordered "HTML5 in easy steps", and requested notification when Version 5 Javascript in easy steps comes into stock. Might just drop a hint around the family for
"JavaScript and jQuery: The Missing Manual 2nd Edition" as a Christmas prezzy !!

If Santa fails you, explore availability and cost of an "inter-library loan" because the book must be in deposit libraries.

"HTML5 in easy steps" arrived today. Very impressed. Takes it nice and slowly with lots of hints and tips. Just the job for the dark nights!

Glad you share my first impressions. It got me a very long and successful way, (until I needed something more comprehensive to solve more ambitious design problems!)

Of course book discussions are a bit off the original title of this thread.
That could make it harder for people in future to find these comments.

I download my webcam image to my webserver (linux) and overlay the text with ImageMagic. I pull the wind and temp from the realtime.txt file.

I can post the code if anyone is interested.

I use WebCam-XP.

Allows me to overlay time, date, text, logos, images, you name it, directly in the capture.
also allows me more source inputs than I'll use any time soon simultaneously... limitations being capture devices CPU and ram in and bandwidth out.
