Stevenson Screen Kit?

Post by ScottVan »

Has anyone run across a wooden stevenson screen kit? I saw some pics of one once and never tracked down where it came from. I'm done with the plastic bowl routine!! Not sturdy enough.

I did price out some small window louvers from Lowe's and they are quite pricey to start. I continue to design my own but thought there might be a it out there already. If not, well, maybe I'll start kitting one up!

I made mine from wood with plastic angle to make the louvres and plastic trays from a cheapo shop for the roof. There's a thread about it on here somewhere.

Sorry, no banner - weather station out of action. Hoping to be up and running with a new home-made one soon.

Hi - I made one for my weather station this weekend based on the wooden box with the plastic white louvred screens (the type you get to cover gas ventalations. Cost me around £50 for all the bits and bobs which was a lot cheaper than buying one. I have attached some photographs. I just need the sun to shine now so that I can test it properly!!
My last version was simply a black plastic flowerpot (you can see it in the background on the photograph), painted white and attached to the fence. Was fairly good as a quick solution but the temperature readings were higher than they should have been.

It is a bit pricey but this firm does a wooden one in Norfolk, UK as brought by a relative of mine:
http://www.russell-scientific.co.uk/pro ... small_1292
Comes in a 'flat pack' unpainted wood.
I'd recommend painting black inside, white outside. Only the door is louvered, the sides have a dozen holes each, but the solid back would work against a fence, wall, or building.

I suspect home built from plastic vents is better!

Because that's what the spec requires. It's also what the Met office does:

Here is my DIY Stevenson screen. I built it over two Saturday afternoons out of a few scrap pieces of 2x4s and plywood. I didn’t even make a drawing, just started building. (For thoses of you who don’t know what a 2x4 is: it’s a piece of dimensional lumber of (nominal) 2 inches hight and 4 inches width. It comes in length of 6 to 16 feet).

Image

Out of the 2x4s I ripped ¼ in slats for the louvers and ¾ in sticks for the 3 sides and the door. I dadoed the vertical members of the frames at a 35° angle, glued in the slats and the louvers were ready. A piece of ½ in plywood for the floor and roof, paint the box white – finished. Total cost: $0, since the stuff was just leftovers from other projects. If you have to buy it, maybe $5 …

If anybody is interested I can draw up a plan and parts list.

PS. The two solar panels power a small fan in the floor to enhance air circulation

while originally it was that size, these days not much larger than 1.5" x 3.5"

For anyone interested here is a link to a genuine stevenson screen for auction on ebay:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Steve ... 25774ac407

To me it looks like the roof and roof support cross members are not original. Maybe it is of interest to someone local to Berkshire.

IMHO its value isn't much more than the current bid of £30. Having said that it does come with the metal stand, although not shown in the images.

Looked a nice item, although quite a bit of work to get it looking good again.
