Cheap lightning detector?

Post by mcrossley »

A detector on a chip - low power for battery/portable operation, no direction capabilites, or strike type discrimination as far as I can see though.

I think you would need to be pretty good with electronic to do anything with the raw chip.

It is in a MLPQ format.

For use in outside applications where proximity lightning detection is of use, most of the weather detectors have directional capabilities to show where the lightning is.

This system is directional, features very long range, and is still relatively cheap.

I built the Hobby Boards PVC lightning sensor around 10 years ago and its still working just fine today. I have not replaced the battery in that time.

Some sad news about Frank Kooiman, the creator of the project.
Sadly he passed away in April. Information about his passing and the continuation of his Lightning Radar project can be found at http://www.lightningradar.net/Discut/in ... b87cb33f02

Sorry, no banner - weather station out of action. Hoping to be up and running with a new home-made one soon.

I used to use mine years ago on my mobile phone golfing prior to incliment weather; just really a time thing for slow versus speed golf. (9 or 18 etc).
