Rain gauge Bird Poot Stopper
Here is a picture of my fine offset rain gauge with extended sides and bird poot prevent setup.
The sides are extended up using aluminum flashing I got from a building store. Easy to bend and you can cut it or mark to bend with a razor knife. I made a simple wire clip to hold it in place to make it easy to remove.
If you look closely, you will see strands of monofiliment dangling down from above. There is only a few strands about a foot or a bit more in length. The birds can't see it very well as I understand it so they are afraid to land on the rain gauge. I use it to cover my strawberry plants as well.
I tried to make the file as small as I could and still show the monofiliment fishing line

I think this second one is the approach I need to use. I don't have anything to dangle fishing line from as in Randy's system.

I like that idea using the nails. Easy to make and durable.

I think the nails are a good idea, although I don't have a problem with the birds.wd40 wrote:I like that idea using the nails. Easy to make and durable.

I do wonder what is above your raingauge to hold the string though, and if is the best place to put a rain gauge.

That is another real good idea. Easy to make and remove.

Spiders must not like bird poot. As soon as I solved the bird problem. Spiders moved in jamming up the rain gauge.

You should get a spider eating bird for that problem....

If I had one of those, I think the rain gauge would go unattended by me.Tonky wrote:You should get a spider eating bird for that problem....

Ah, but how do you stop long-range / high-elevation bird poot?
