WiFiLogger for Davis stations

Post by PaulMy »

For those interested, there will be a Wifi logger available soon.

See discussion here http://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic= ... #msg348486
It is primarily an alternate to WeatherlinkIP but can be a serial/USB replacement as well.

Enjoy,
Paul

We will be distributing this WiFi logger for Europe (and further afield if requested, but Ryan will be handling the Americas via Scaled Instruments). We are expected a first limited batch of stock by the start of next week (w/b 18th June) but pre-orders are welcome.

We have some preliminary information online, subject to tweaking with better pictures etc at:

http://www.weatherstations.co.uk/wifi-logger.htm

with secure online ordering at:

http://shop.weatherstations.co.uk/wifi- ... 1752-p.asp

If you're outside the UK then please note the request for an email enquiry first so that appropriate shipping can be quoted.

Update: Stock now arrived and available for ordering.

Works great and uploads to WL.com, WU, PWS Weather, AWEKAS, CWOP and now also WOW, as well as logger data. There are settings to use with Cumulus or Weatherlink.

That's all correct (of course :) ), but I'm just being slightly cautious about uploads to wl.com. For anyone who is already uploading via a USB or IP logger then there shouldn't be any issue about using the WiFi logger as a substitute. But for anyone who is not already uploading then I don't want to guarantee that wl.com uploads might continue uninterrupted long-term.

It's impossible to rule out that Davis might find a way of blocking these uploads should they choose to do so. Hopefully this won't happen, but I'd rather under-promise on this particular detail and if it should turn out that the uploads encounter no problem then that's all well and good.

Hi John,
Your words are wise...

I fall in this category
For anyone who is already uploading via a USB or IP logger then there shouldn't be any issue about using the WiFi logger as a substitute.
I don't have a weatherlinkIP logger nor paid subscription but use the USB/Envoy and have been uploading to weatherlink.com (v.2) for several months, first by periodically running Weatherlink (after shutting down Cumulus for short periods) and then with VVP running both Weatherlink and Cumulus. That worked fine but VVP is not 100% reliable so now most of the time I don't run Weatherlink and use WiFiLogger to upload to weatherlink.com and that works great.

Enjoy,
Paul

One of the disadvantages of the Davis WeatherLink IP data logger is that it can't both upload to weatherlink.com and stay connected to a third party weather software product. Cumulus and CumulusMX try to get around this by allowing a "delay period" to be set. I have been unable to get CumulusMX to run in a stable way with this delay period and need to shut off the upload on the logger or CumuluxMX crashes. WeeWX stays connected but it blocks the upload.

Will this WiFiLogger allow simultaneous uploading to weatherlink.com and connecting to CumulusMX and/or WeeWX?

I'll be glad to test one out here in the US :) .

Also, what will the pricing be?

If you're in the US then you need to look at Ryan's online shop:

https://www.scaledinstruments.com/shop/ ... ifilogger/

Re simultaneous uploading: The WFL is certainly more flexible than the IP logger, but you can't escape the fact that its computing power is limited. It can't be otherwise - this isn't some powerful multicore processor running eg Linux and able to run server-type software, it's more a low-power device built to perform specific jobs. I guess the limits and configurations of what is possible for running multiple applications ROBUSTLY remain to be established once more users start to experiment. Maybe one/some of the other beta testers could comment.

I will try again,
You can get more information here http://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic= ... #msg351155

Running WiFiLogger in its normal mode with uploading to the various sites and then also Cumulus is not very reliable for me and does crash Cumulus.
However there are Pause and Sleep interval settings to permit third party access but I have not yet fully understood how those should be set to allow third party programs periodic access.

Also with the WiFiLogger sleep setting so that it does not do its usual site updates, Cumulus can be set to use TCP/IP and then should have direct access, but still a single program access. I have not tried this as I am also using a separate Envoy/USB/Cumulus1 setup (from one ISS).

Enjoy,

With the latest WiFiLogger firmware I am now successfully running CumulusMX and WiFiLogger is uploading to WL, WU, CWOP, PWS, AWEKAS, WOW.

Now been 2 days since the new firmware with the TCP Port Auto pause setting and CumulusMX at 15 sec disconnect and all seems well.

Enjoy,

Presumably by "Latest (new) firmware" you mean v 1.14 which is not yet available to users not on the "testing" program? 1.13 is the latest firmware available for download and does not have the Auto Pause option.

Yes latest is now v116 and presume Wojtek will likely release soon. It also fixed a bug in CWOP upload which occasionally had 255 for wind speed. It now has an option to use 10 min avg, 2-min avg, and current for wind speed.

The manuals also need updating and that takes time.

v1.17 is now available. I'm also maintaining a WiFi logger section on our Davis knoweldgebase, so this shoould be a backup to other sources of firmware and WFL information online. You can find the relevant section at:

Some disappointment that I've had 2 crashes with CumulusMX over the past 24 hours, after working so well for several days. Haven't tried to determine what was the cause and could be my computer as I have it running more than a few things :o . This is running WiFiLogger with all its features and uploads and also CumulusMX.

Its been a week since you last posted - any update on how things are going?
PaulMy wrote:Now been 2 days since the new firmware with the TCP Port Auto pause setting and CumulusMX at 15 sec disconnect and all seems well.
I am curious about this. I have a MeteoBridge uploading to WU & CWOP and an rPi running CumulusMX 24/7. I don't have any disconnect set in CMX and all works flawlessly. I also don't have a disconnect set on the MB, but looking at the log I see that it is in fact disconnecting around every minute for around 2 seconds.

I want to replace the MB with the WFL to add uploading to WeatherLink and for other reasons, but only if it works as well as my current setup.

Thanks - Herb

EDIT: Regarding the 2 second disconnect...MB is NOT disconnecting from the rPi running CMX to upload to WU & CWOP. I happened to have WeatherLink running on my PC when I made that observation. What I saw in the log was WeatherLink disconnecting from the MB while WeatherLink made its upload to weatherlink.com
