Rainguage problem

I have a WH3081 weather station. I am having a problem with spiders getting into the raingauge and locking the tipping bucket with their webs. I have tried a surface spray on the outside - not much success. Pulling the gauge apart and cleaning them out only has limited success. Does anyone have any suggestion as to how I can prevent this happening? PS I live in the antipodes (Australia).

Another method is to block off all the openings (except the funnel inlet) with fine mesh which still lets water out. I did this with fine perforated zinc sheet pieces attached internally with hot melt glue. Did this years ago and had no problems since.
