Hi

Getting really frustrated with this device now as I seem to have constant issues. I am on my second rain measurement device as they keep failing and now I am having problems getting the data off it into Cumulus.

Seemed to be working OK for a while however now i have plugged it in and i get an error. I have attached the bug report.

If anyone can assist i would really appreciate it.

I also have a further question:
How often to i need to pull the data from the station into Cumulus?

I would have thought it would record months of data on the device however it only seems to record a couple of weeks and therefore as i only remember every month or so I have big gaps in the data i have in Cumulus.

Any pointers gratefully received.

Many Thanks

It seems to be having problems accessing the serial port. Are you using a real port, or a USB adapter?

La Crosse stations have a very small memory. I can't remember exactly how many entries, but at a reasonable interval of 5 or 10 minutes, it won't hold more than a day or so.

Hi Steve

It seems to access the serial port absolutely fine as it will display the realtime readings and you get the 'new record' light flash each time it received a new record.

I am using a serial to USB adaptor that was supplied by La Crosse when i bought the device and it has always worked fine. If you have any ideas why it will not collect the stored records that would be great.

Why on earth would the bother producing a device with such a small memory? Memory is so cheap today and amount of data it needs to hold would be tiny - i guess a 1mb of memory would probably be a whole year of records.

I do have another question: If in the Configuration tab you set things like an interval of say 30 minutes, does that flow to the device? Going through the menus on the device itself i cannot see any way of changing settings like this however would prefer to set the interval to the max so I capture more days worth of data between uploads. Is it the same with Alarms? If i change an alarm on Cumulus does it flow back to the device?

Many Thanks for your help

Jonathan

Setting the logger interval in Cumulus does not set the logger interval in the station, nor does any other setting.

I'm sorry but I can't support Cumulus with the use of USB adapters and La Crosse stations, as they are known to cause problems because of the La Crosse serial implementation. I have spent a lot of time on this in the past, and I'm afraid I'm not prepared to spend any more. Some adapters do seem to give better results than others.

Welcome to the forum. But it wasn't designed "today" but maybe 5 or 10 (or more) years ago. :)

However, the primary reason is probably that they're not using a memory chip (which costs money and needs a data bus) but just the "spare" RAM or EEPROM of a small microcontroller. That may have literally just a few hundred (or at most a few k) bytes of storage.

Fine Offset (WH-108x, etc.) do at least do it "properly" with (IIRC) a 256k bit I2C (two wire bus) memory, but that still only holds data for about two weeks with a 5 minutes period.

Cheers, Alan.

Hi jonathangaillard,

This post might be of interest to you: https://cumulus.hosiene.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=7223

I have used a ws-2355 on a serial port since 2009 with almost no trouble from the station. I also have a ws-2306 in an unattended remote location, using an FTDI usb/serial adapter and it has run faultlessly since January 2013. I can't explain why it runs so well, but i also have the thermo/hydro sensor unit hard-wired due to screening effect of the building (a steel shed).

I found these documents out on the web a few years ago which may be of use:

I hope this is helpful.

Thanks for all the responses guys

I have tried everything with this thing. Well what i know how to do anyway. I have uninstalled Cumulus and re installed, i have also defaulted the device and set it up again. I still get the same errors whenever i plug the device in.

Realtime data feed is fine, it will just not store a single record.

The device is still under warranty therefore i am going to see if they will take it back. I am able to upgrade what is a better option as this La Cross just seems a bit rubbish really.

Many Thanks
Jonathan
