The most basic question ever

Morning,

Can anyone tell me how to organise my directories on my website so this all works? I've got core FTP LE and currently in the root directory (using weatherlink) the folders are:-

<..>
cgi-bin
conf
error_docs
httpdocs
statistics

Somehow, when someone types in my address (www.greatasby.co.uk) the information pops straight up. I'd like to replicate that with Cumulus!

Ok, this is what I've done so far.

When I log onto my webspace using ftp le, it takes me straight into a folder called httpdocs. Within that, I've created a folder called weather, where I have uploaded the files, as directed in the cumulus help. Then, in the internet conficuration bit, I've put in the host name (which I think is customersites3.easily.co.uk) my username and password (as used with ftp le), ftp port 21 and directory "weather". I have autoupdate and active ftp ticked. When I ok all that, it says, at the bottom, connecting to website, and then does nothing else.

I must have something wrong somewhere, but have I got the file structure right?

OK (read your other post first)

First of all, your pages are going to be in

httpdocs

So move to that directory with Core, now you can see all your existing files and any sub-directories.

Following your other post, use Core to make a new directory weather (Click on the folder icon).

<double-click> weather directory and you are in an empty folder.

In the left-hand pane of Core navigate to and enter program files/cumulus/webfiles,
Then hightlight everyhing you see and click the now illuminated blue arrow toward the top right of the left-hand Core pane. INCLUDE THE dbimages DIRECTORY

That's your cumulus site ready for uploads

Then in Cumulus - Configuration - Internet

Set your directory to httpdocs/weather

Web Settings:
Tick Auto Update and put a time (minutes)
Tick Enable realtime and put a time (seconds)

.... and Bob's your hairy Auntie

Is not enough, there is nothing there to identify your webspace, unless it's based on your user name.

It should be the same as whatever you do to log in with Core (It's doing exactly the same thing )

I haven't tried httpdocs/weather as in Weatherlink, I didn't have to put httpdocs - it seemed to assume it.

I wondered that too, but that is how I log in using Core. Perhaps my username and password direct everything to where it should be...as you suggest.

Well, that uploaded (which is more than it's ever done) but I can't see it on my website!

When I put in http://www.greatasby.co.uk/weather, it says I don't have permission to view access /weather on this server. If I put in http://www.greatasby.co.uk/httpdocs/weather, it just laughs at me.

Looking at the folders using Core, I haven't uploaded any of the other folders, such as cumulus/web. Do I simply upload all of these, and if so, whereabouts?

directory in Cumulus Internet settings should have read /httpdocs/weather (forgot leading /), think you forgot picture.jpg though

I reckon I can fiddle around with things like pictures etc to customise it. Do you know how I'd change it so it appeared just by putting in http://www.greatasby.co.uk - like my weatherlink currently does? Perhaps I just delete my "weather" folder and put everything straight into httpdocs?

As I said earlier, you can only have one index page in a directory, last one in would overwrite the other

Either modify Weatherlink index to include Cumulus link, or create a new 'home' page which has all sorts of rhubarb on it with links to wherever you want (would be best to 'move' Weatherlink to it's own directory)

I've just hacked into the Pentagon's website and have launched an all-out nuclear strike on Argos in Maidstone.

If I only wanted to use this new one, could I do that though? Sorry if I'm being thick.

Glad you got it sorted, why not update to the latest version of cumulus as well....

scroll to the bottom for the latest version and just install over the top.

Yup, delete everything WL related in httpdocs, and rebuild Cumulus there - BUT, what a waste of webspace !

Sooner or later you will want to do other, perhaps non-weather related pages.
So better to have things organised in separate directories.

If you want to just have an address for the weather 'site', buy another name !, they are cheap enough now, and just (re)direct it to yoursite/weather.

In the short term, if you can't think of a use for your webspace, replace the (weatherlink) index.html in httpdocs for:

Search engines will refuse to log your pages using this method, but it won't take you long to decide which way you want to go.

PS. this place http://www.123-reg.co.uk/ is as good as any for getting / redirecting a new name.

Thanks for that. I'm going to try to get my head round virtulVP and try and run both my original page and the Cumulus for now...I think.
