Web page scrambled

Post by Alan »

Hi, I created my web page something like 8 years ago and have had it working well until recently. Suddenly the page has become somewhat disjointed, data seems ok it's just the presentation that has gone off. I can't find any difference in the file that is being uploaded. I am hoping that somebody has come across this situation before and known how to fix it, for I certainly don't.
I have attached the file being uploaded and supplied this url,
http://home.exetel.com.au/retnuh/weather/lite.htm

Thanks in advance,
Alan

Good grief !!!!

You have lots of dodgy javascript.
Disjointed elements
.... and some crazy declarations.
eg. style="font-size:1300%"

You are on your own :o

A couple of things. The very large font size is intentional as the web page was designed for use on my laptop and be able to be read from across the room.
Dodgy javascript.. quite possible as I am not a programmer and have little knowledge. But, the thing is that that page has operated perfectly for 8 or so years. In fact beteljuice helped me with the original workings and indeed some of your work is within that file. It is only recently that the problem has presented itself. My hunch (limited) is that the problem may be in the processing by Cumulus of the file on it's way to the ISP.

That is very interesting. I have not done anything in the way of fixing yet.
Would it be at all possible to for you to post a screenshot of that web page from your system? It would be very much appreciated.

You need a hi-res screen! I tried with Edge (Chromium) and it isn't right

So I scaled your 1300% fonts back to 1000% and it looks like this

Unfortunately there are still many things wrong.
I think beteljuice is correct with his statement about dodgy code. It worked perfectly for many years then suddenly the problem appeared on my PC but my laptop was still ok. Then I had a new OS installed on the laptop and it too then presented the problem.
My current thinking is that the dodgy code worked ok with older version of browsers but when they were update it exposed that dodgy code. Probably a code rework is the only answer.
Anyway thanks to you all for your effort.

Firefox does have a better reputation than Microsoft for keeping up with the latest CSS recommendations, I have not looked at your code, but if it is old it might be written to CSS 1 or CSS 2 standards, CSS 3 has been evolving for years, with some people labelling the latest recommendations that are not yet adopted into standard as CSS 4. JavaScript has had relatively few changes from its origins as "LIveScript" in netscrape days, although its rename suggested it might start changing to work more like Java. However, recently it has had some additions. Some browsers are more tolerant of bad JavaScript than others, and of course Internet Explorer used a different script language called Jscript until its final version.

Firefox does provide web pages that discuss changes and the extent to which different browsers implement them within https://developer.mozilla.org/....
I might read up on this, but it does not mean I am yet able to write to latest standards, or spot what others need to change.

The js sort of makes sense, but there are many html attribute type errors and 'bad' statements.

There is a strange use of <p> in some places and so on ...
Interesting than none of the screenshots show the 'intended' font colors.

... but thanks to them I have a better idea of the intended format !!!

Everything is just too big for my inherited knackered laptop.
