Recommendation for free webspace compatible with Cumulus

Post by espana23 »

Hi,

I am in the process of setting up a website to display my weather station data. The wiki of sandaysoft.com recommends the two free webspaces of http://www.freeglovine.com/ and http://www.tipdots.com/ but none of them are operational right now (http://www.tipdots.com/ says it's under maintenance when you try to sign-up for the last couple of days).

Can someone please recommend any free webspaces that they know are compatible with Cumulus?

Thank you.

Regards,
Mike

Mike,

There will always be a downside to free webservers - adverts and probably lots of them. This probably won't endear your visitors to your website. Some are also funny about frequent updates that weather stations employ.

Steve (Cumulus author) offers webhosting for a reasonable fee. I've been with him for the last year and my site has been rock solid. That reminds me... my renewal fee is due next week. I'll be in touch Steve. :)
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for the reply. I am aware of the downsides of free webspaces but would like to use one at this stage. Later on I will consider paying for webspace.

Regards,
Mike

Thanks for the information ace2.

It seems that free webspaces are not very popular to be used with Cumulus. Anyway, if anyone happens to use one and can share the info it would be great.

Thanks.

Do you have web space with your ISP?

If you are willing to forgo realtime gauges, then pretty much any hosting that supports ftp upload will do - even 000webhost.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the info. I tried using https://byethost.com/ earlier today, but I had used realtime gauges which caused issues and had my account suspended. I'll try using it without the realtime gauges enabled.

I am running with biz.nf at the moment (who are domiciled in Norfolk Island apparently). My free domain and web site is www.spinneyhill.co.nf. There are no adverts and they allow automatic FTP updates.

My first attempt at a free host did not allow that so the account was suspended the first time Cumulus tried to update.

I've been using X10 for a few years. I know some people don't like them, but they've been OK and fairly robust for me. The only downside is having to remember to log in to your control panel once every 30 days, but you get automated emails, so it's easy to unsuspended your account.

Site at flatroofweather.elementfx.com

I tried a few other "unlimited bandwidth" providers first, who weren't so happy with frequent updates... Never tried real time gauges though.
