Maplins WH1080

Post by super_claret »

Hi everyone. I'm a total newbie and have just purchased the Maplins Wireless Weather Forecaster (WH1080) as it was at a bargain half price when I called in to the store today.

As I can't leave my laptop running all day to record the data I was wondering whether the Cumulus software downloads the data which the base station records when I connect the two on an evening? Apologies if this seems a silly question!

Many thanks

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Yes, you can leave your laptop off. Just keep your weather station console on (not that it can be turned off).

When you are ready, connect up the cable to your laptop, start Cumulus and it will download all the data it missed.

I notice your profile says you are on Windows 7 -- please ensure Cumulus is NOT installed under c:\program files as it may cause you grief later on ;)

Hi and welcome
Just to confirm Davids post all will be fine I operate in the same way you are planning
my laptop is generally off all day & the stored data is collected in the evening when i get home from work
my station and website have been running quite happily like this for nearly 2 years now
please note that if you join PWS weather or weather underground the data that you have accumulated while offline will not be uploaded
Good luck and hope you get much pleasure from your new station

But note that the 1.9.1 beta version does upload the 'missing' data for Weather Underground (but not yet for PWS Weather).

The Weather Underground delayed upload has been implemented in the 1.9.1 beta and it's great (along with the other improvements)

oops - crossed with Steve's reply :)

Many thanks for the replies. Not too sure I'll be setting up a website in the near future as I still have a lot to learn about the base station settings and the weather in general.

Can anyone recommend any books for beginners?

Many thanks

There are some books listed on 'my' Weather FAQs site: http://weatherfaqs.org.uk/node/105 some of which are aimed at beginners. I've got the one by Ross Reynolds; it's pretty good.

Thanks Steve, I'll have a look at those.

Another question, off topic, where can I see the CET from the 1600's to present?

Thanks

I also have one of these, purchased for 1/2 price, as it is such good value I wondered about getting a another one so that I could have a second display elsewhere in the house (and a spare set of sensors!). BUT can you run 2 displays from one set of sensors? I assume that if the data flow is only coming one way from the sensors then it should be ok.
Also, I have the parts from a Davis Weather Monitor 11, including the rain gauge. As this is a far more substantial bit of kit could it be used to replace the WH1080 gauge? the instructions I have for it state that it switches every .2mm of rain.

You would only be able to run 2 displays if they were on the same channel
I have a WH1050 and a WH1080 both running at the same time and have no problems
but running 2 WH1080 displays will depend what channels they are on.

You can indeed run 2 displays from 1 transmitter, as Orion says as long as they are use the same frequency band.
(i.e the transmitter and both receivers are using the same basic frequency band of 868 Mhz, or all on 435Mhz)
If you ensure the trnsmitter is on before you switch on the recievers, they will automatically sort themselves out the "channel" frequency in use.

Just had a look at my WH1050 transmitter and it transmits on 433.92Mhz

When the base station is powered up it enters into learning mode to learn the sensors security code.

But my WH1050 base will not pick up the sensors that came with my WH1080
so either they are on different frequency's or use different sensor codes.

Check if your WH1080 is also 433.92MHz - both mine are and will happily run 2 consoles from one transmitter and even 2 consoles from 2 transmitters independently. I have that arrangement now while I'm running tests. You may need to try more than once as each console will lock on to whichever transmission it sees first.

I'm surprised you can't mix and match the WS1050 with the WS1080 as both units as sold by Maplin use the same frequency and the sensor units look the same. I would certainly have thought they'd have used the same sensors for both to reduce production costs.

Maplin have the WS1050 on half price offer until Christmas. http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?Mod ... =Frontpage

Sorry, no banner - weather station out of action. Hoping to be up and running with a new home-made one soon.
