how to connect the router directly to the FO ?
Hi guys,
I make a special request.
I have a router with usb port, to which I would like to directly connect the weather station WH3100 (FO with solar)
This particular link is necessary because the weather station and the server are quite distant and the router could simplify everything.
Cumulus run on Server 24h
Do you have any idea to solve?
Thank you for support

I suspect that the USB port on the router is for a storage device and won't be suitable.
Can you give more details of the router?

Thak U for reply
The USB port on router is for storage and network printers.
Whereas it can handle a printer, I hope it can also operate the weather station.
The other possibility is to use the Ethernet port via an adapter "USB to Ethernet," but I have not the slightest idea if it will work.

Re: how to connect the router directly to the FO ?
I think it's highly unlikely that you can connect your station to the USB port on the station and expect any software to be able to talk to it - Cumulus or anything else. You would need something on the PC to make it look like the station was connected directly to the PC so that software could drive it that way.
I think your best bet is a USB over Ethernet adapter, which makes the remote devices attached to it appear as if they are connected to the PC (via software which runs on the PC). I don't know if the Fine Offset station would work that way, though. I think this kind of thing has been discussed on the forum before.

Re: how to connect the router directly to the FO ?
Hello Steve and thanks for your support.
In these days I did some tests and I'm afraid that your analysis is correct: there is no way to see anything else that is not a printer or pendrive / hd only.
Also the solution via adapter "usb to ethernet" I see it difficult too.
I currently use a very long USB cable (about 5-6mt), but the Fine Offset is still too far away from the TX and the signal is unstable on the 24h.
At any cost I must be able to move most of the RX

If (and it's a big IF) you could install OpenWrt (https://openwrt.org/) on the router then you might have a chance of running one of the small Linux weather station software options available.
There's a very high probability of 'bricking' the router when doing this sort of thing though.

Re: how to connect the router directly to the FO ?
The firmware's router is managed directly by the supplier adsl as well as the Telemanagement.
I have the ability to open any port and many other small marginal functions, certainly not the installation any software.
A possible solution could be the use of "USB to USB wireless", but from what I have seen on the net, the cost outweighs the benefits.

A pair of USB over CAT5 cable extenders may do the trick.
I've some of these

and they work over 10-15 metres OK. I've never had a need to try over a greater distance.

Thank tumutbound
Unfortunately, I have not even 1mm of space in cable ducts, in order to pass another cable.
I know. I'm a hopeless case.

So that's your real concern !I currently use a very long USB cable (about 5-6mt), but the Fine Offset is still too far away from the TX and the signal is unstable on the 24h.
Try opening up the Rx and doubling the length of the aerial.
Not sure if it is a 'real' wire in your model or a PC track - or what your dipole length is !
.. if you do a search on here you will find the mods and photographs of the old models.
Of cource the easiest way would be the usb . ethernet adapters (should be good for > 30m)

I am aware that the real problem is just that, but I could not find suitable hardware solutions, the only way is the rapprochement of the RX.

At the limit, I also feel this way.

I also agree USB ethernet adapters will do the trick. I have a few of these for various appliances at work, and some older RS-232 to Ethernet adapters as well for very old CNC machines.

Re: how to connect the router directly to the FO ?
I have been using a cheap pair of Cat5 USB extenders for about two years with my WH3081. It's the perfect solution as I already have a patch panel and RJ45 wall sockets installed.
Even though the extenders were only USB1.1, I never really encountered any problems. After all, the fine offset device presents itself as a USB Human Interface Device, so it's not like it needs the faster speeds offered by USB2.0.
I have my receiver/base station located about 20 metres away from my noisy rack-mount server.
