stand alone WX system - PC free
Hi guys.
has anyone looked at interfacing a FO/EW system DIRECTLY to a router?
I would like to run the wx station PC free to cut costs.
The easy option would be a cheap Laptop but i wondered if the USB data could be put thru a pic based converter and fed to the router?
Any ideas please?
Regards - Phil (G0DOR)

There is a way, but it costs.
I don't really know what I'm talking about, however...
There is a specialised router/modem into which you can plug a USB weather station and have it puts it's data out to a web site. You add code in the unit and it can then stand alone. Wether it might work with the FO/EW unit is anyones guess.
I would assume if it can run to upload to a web site, it could also store the data on the site which could then be downloaded back to your PC once you turn it on.
Don't assume that just because a router has a USB port (for a printer), that you could get it to work via one of those. I bought a Netgear wireless print server (WiFi + 4 wired ports + 2 USB ports) as a temporary link to a network printer. That particular laser printer worked fine with it via a wired port, but I was not able to get a USB printer to work at all. If its support of USB printers was limited, I would not expect there would be much chance of it working at all with a USB weather station.

I've looked at that and you can pick up that specific router for about £35 but then have to pay for the software. Would it ever be possible to get something like that to work with Cumulus - not this Meteohub thing?

Re: stand alone WX system - PC free
Cumulus would require a windows operating system and that type of device is typically used with a stripped down Linux OS.
You could use something like this which would most likely work with Cumulus now, but it is still a PC...

It's not beyond the bounds of possibility that a modified version of Cumulus could run on Linux, using Lazarus. I believe that's how a certain other weather program (also written in Delphi) gets its Linux (and Mac OS?) versions.

Another possibility is using a EEEPC netbook like the Acer One or the Asus 901. If you are going to spend £200 might as well get a useful little PC. Apparently only consumes about 25 watts so would be a cheap server replacement, especially when they become available second user.

Re: stand alone WX system - PC free
I am running cumulus on an old small form factor notebook, IBM X31 I use the built in Wifi to transfer the files from Cumulus to my server, not exactly long range but with good AP's and directional aerials I can get quite a few KM (clear LOS)
