Scotch Whisky recommendation

Post by LeGrec »

Just realise that Steve and Daj are from Scotland.
Any good Scotch recommendation directly from Scotsman? Or any one else for that matther?

I'm still a beginner on that subject, currently enjoying a Balvenie 12yr and Higland Park 12yr.

Cheers!

Hmmm... where to begin?

If you like very peaty: Laphroaig
Quite peaty: Talisker
Not peaty: Balvenie Doublewood

Some I've enjoyed recently:

Jura Superstition
Old Pulteney

My Balvenie Doublewood was finish so i picked up a Talisker 10y yesterday. Quite an improvement compare to the Highland Park that i have (i put them on the same tasting level). More complex aromas.
But after this one, i'm afraid to taste the Laphroaig if it is even peatier!!! It must be intense.

Just to compare. The Talisker 10y 750ml is sold 73.50$CAD. How much is it in Scotland?

Yes; it's something of an acquired taste. Some people prefer not to acquire the taste!

It's the equivalent of about 50$CAD in the supermarkets. It appears that it's currently on special offer at 40$CAD equivalent just now, and as it happens I have to go over to Orkney mainland to the hospital on Monday, so I may well restock while I'm there.

Hi,
I was also asked this very question by a friend in Spain!

Whilst the ones mentioned are excellent (there are no bad Scotch whisky's just some are better than others...!), whilst I personally highly rate the Talisker, it's dark flavours sometimes put people off.
The same is true for a lot of the Island whisky's. Cask strength Laphroig is to die for if you can get it but it very strong and almost oily, mmm fabulous!

However two outstanding whisky's which are not so common are the Longmorn and Craggmore. These are Speysides and are probably the best all round whisky's in the world. That'll probably start an international argument but what can I say I love em!

Cut with just a touch of natural spring water to release the full flavour and aroma, there are few pleasures better than a really good genuine Scotch!

I'll be having one shortly...

cheers,
B.

Had a special this weekend at the store. Buy two+ spirits, get 15%. So i got myself the Laphroaig and Benriach 15yr Tawny Port finish.

Was afraid of the Laphroaig, but i can say that it is now my favorite. Flavor are so well balance and less intense than the Talisker.
As for the Benriach, it is a blind test and i'm pleasantly suprise.

Special is still active today, might tempt myself and try Bill suggestion. Getting a nice collection over here, hehehe
Edit: oh well, after looking, these are not available in Quebec :(

Hi,
That's a pity, they are really exceptional whisky's.
Cragganmore is becoming a bit more common here, I think it has been bought over by one of the drinks giants so is getting a bit more distribution but I've only ever seen the Longmorn in airport duty free shops recently, definitely a targeted market.

Your purchase sounds great anyway!, to be savoured and enjoyed.

If you like the Laphroig another island whisky you might be able to get is the Bowmore. It's not quite a strongly flavoured as Laphroig but again an exceptional spirit.

cheers,
Bill.
