I am fascinated by the words: "Waxing gibbous".
I know what they mean: a moon that is more than half full, and growing.
But - for the benefit of a foreigner whose first language is not English - can anyone please explain those 2 words and their linguistic origin?
"Waxing" sounds to me sort of old Nordic for growing ("Wax" = "Voks").
But "gibbous"? I haven't a clue....
