Rain in Germany, Belgium and Nethelands moves to the sea

Post by HansR »

Everybody probably has heard about the torrential rains of the last days in Germany and Belgium (and France and Netherlands as well btw but there it was only regional).

If anybody is wondering where all that water is moving to I can give you a simple answer: to The Netherlands. NL is by origin the Delta of the Rhine and the Meuse (and the Schelde but that is for this situation irrelevant). In the coming week all water will flow as a wave towards the sea and you can follow that here and it looks like the image below (yes, in Dutch but once you get the hang of it it is easy). On the live site you can click all stations for more info.

One interesting remark: all barriers at the seaside will be open now. But in wintertime it may very well be possible those barriers need to be closed to protect NL from the sea. If in such situation the rivers swell we are threatened from two sides and the water inside can only rise (the soup plate fills). That is why currently in the Afsluitdijk (north of NL) pumps are installed which can evacuate 235 m3/second (three of them together) hoping that will suffice.

It is estimated that sea level rise will (or may) prevent future existence of NL.
This is the counterpoint of wildfires and fire risk estimation.
