Relocation of anemometer - feasible?

@Mapantz, maybe. I’ve never handled a fibreglass pole so don’t know how flexible or not it is. The poles I’ve looked at don’t appear to have any eyes to take a guy rope. If it was 30ft+ and only attached to a heavy base then guying would be necessary.

But we’re only talking about 15ft being unsupported. I can’t see any wind sway seriously affecting the measured speed. Trying to position an anemometer to record gusts as accurately as possible is more difficult than it should be. Davis only offer a tripod with poles extending it to 8ft making it designed to sit in the apex of a roof. And it’s not cheap.

But getting onto a roof is the problem as you get older. Requiring a pole to have a minimum diameter of 32mm is frustrating when it’s holding something weighing less than 1lb. Maybe some form of collar could be attached around the pole I linked to making it large enough to take the mounting bracket.

Thanks John but they’re alloy only and the weight without guys would be prohibitive. What’s your opinion on a fibreglass pole?

This 20ft one weighs just 3kg. Frustratingly 30mm when 32mm is the minimum diameter. How to overcome that problem? Thoughts about whether guying is needed and how it can be done on a wall?

Presumably each guy line needs to be 120° to the others. How does that work when mounted on the side wall of a house? I could only attach a guy along that wall. So one towards the front of the house and the other to the rear. It would look really messy.

I have a 6 metre, aluminium, square pole that is screwed to a fence post. It can wave around a bit in big winds but that doesn't seem to be a problem if the rain gauge is not on the pole. Doesn't need guy ropes.

Very helpful, thanks. How many brackets does it have and if more than one how far apart are they? Of course that means your ane is only 6m up and not 10 but sheer practicality has to be considered.

Having heard back from Ian he confirms the anemometer will attach to a pole less than 32mm in diameter.

He also confirmed he doesn't see a problem in using a fibreglass pole providing it has a thickness of 2mm which the one I'm considering has. I've had replies back from Barenco UK and things are coming together nicely. My anemometer will have the cartridge changed tomorrow and a new capacitor installed to the Tx.

Only 2 screws hold this 6 Metre, 40x40mm pole. Certainly high enough for single storey houses. I wouldn't want to go to 10 Metres though. Nice day for a photo.

Thanks Terry. Clearly it does the job. The Davis anemometer is slightly larger but not so much it will be a problem. Lovely weather!
