USB Stations in 2020 - Are they available again???

Post by JacquesD »

Hi,

After 10 years of loyal services, my FineOffset(National Geographic) station lost a wind cup for 2nd time.
I had a spare station, as a donor station, but no more parts to save my station.

So, I've started to searchh for a cheap replacement, but BIOS Weather/National Geographic is dead,
LaCrosse and Oregon don't sell USB station anymore... Accurite seem strong... but not open to DIY'ers!

So, what is the future for personal weather website? New stations are wi-fi and publish themself
to WU... WOW or other.... but not to custom sites!

I can't afford a Davis station... So, what is my choice?

Regards,
Jacques

Hi Jacques,

The Ecowitt stations are WiFi and getting popular, but they also have a device called a GW-1000, which receives the data from the transmitters and will upload it to web sites - BUT, it also has an API that programs like Cumulus can use to get the data as well. Indeed if you have one of those devices you don't actually need the console as well if you don't want it.

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable about all the model number will be along soon to explain the options.

I do have GW1003, the Ultrasonic wind gauge was the main reason but there are others!
I do NOT publish data to Ecowitt, WU or WOW etc etc i.e. you decide what to share with whom

Just know that if you decide to not publish your data to any online source I still recommend connecting your station to your WiFi so that it gains Internet access. Giving your console Internet access ensures that the time clock is always correct as it will sync with Internet time servers. Then if you choose to only use Cumulus MX to only have your data locally you can do so. Uploading to the online services is configurable and optional.
