Vantage Vue ISS Battery Choice
What brand of battery are folks preferring, for the station not the console, as I'm getting the 'Low Battery' warning and no nighttime data symptoms.
And has anyone adapted one to run on mains power?
I realise that any warranty would be voided if you used a non-approved method of power. I was thinking of a dummy battery with a voltage and ampage correct mains supply. Just a thought.

Re: Vantage Vue ISS Battery Choice
I don't have the Vue ISS but in the past there had been reports of bogus Low Battery warnings on the Vue but not read much recently. A search here may show some of the discussions. I have used the Duracell 123 as replacement for my ISS.
The VP2 ISS has alternate power option but not aware for the Vue.
Enjoy,
Paul

Re: Vantage Vue ISS Battery Choice
Thank you dazza and Paul,
Seems like Duracell it is then.
No official mains supply for the Vue, just thought that someone might have 'hacked' it to work by unofficial methods

Re: Vantage Vue ISS Battery Choice
New Duracell battery as recommended above, fitted 2 days ago.
'Low battery' warning extinguished, readings showing at night.
Today, 'Low Battery' showing and no outside readings until the sun hits the solar panel!
Slowly losing interest. I wish it was possible to power it off the mains supply.

Re: Vantage Vue ISS Battery Choice
I've seen conversations on the forum referring to faulty capacitors, or perhaps the term used was "supercap". It sounds as if your symptoms are suggesting this. Don't take my word for it, though, have a search around the forum and you may find a solution.

Re: Vantage Vue ISS Battery Choice
I had this problem a few years ago with my Vantage Vue and it was a capacitor problem - basically it failed. Because I was within the 2 year warrantee I got a new harness which holds the capacitor and it was easy enough to fit.

Re: Vantage Vue ISS Battery Choice
Thank you for the replies.
It does look increasingly like a capacitor problem right enough
The last couple of days the outdoor readings stop at around 4am and start again about 8am which tells my nonelectrical head that the capacitor is working but not very well?
TwoTonTed, was it just the harness or the harness and capacitor that got swapped?

Re: Vantage Vue ISS Battery Choice
the harness has the capacitor integrated within the circuitry if I remember correctly, so it was all in the one part

Re: Vantage Vue ISS Battery Choice
Well it looks like the Vue is slowly loosing the will to live!
Apart from the aforementioned capacitor fault, which results in a new battery draining in 48hrs, and the console having lines of text missing (obviously in the one place that isn't replicated in Cumulus) it has recently stopped recording outside temp and humidity, although the wind speed still shows.
So I'm thinking I'll just reinstall the station to keep an eye on windspeed and when that stops working just get rid. A bit of a shame because I have enjoyed my experience with the Vue and this website and Cumulus.

Re: Vantage Vue ISS Battery Choice
So, why not buy another? Or a cheaper station. Or... a second hand?A bit of a shame because I have enjoyed my experience with the Vue and this website and Cumulus.

Re: Vantage Vue ISS Battery Choice
To be honest, it's all down to money! Can I justify spending £350-400 for a new Vue(can't say I've seen many second-hand ones) ? Probably not.
I will think about a cheaper station but would have to investigate and ask for advice on here before I committed myself ie it would only need to measure wind speed/direction, temperature outdoor and indoor and possibly air pressure. I'm not too bothered about rainfall etc

Re: Vantage Vue ISS Battery Choice
I understand. Well, if you want to stay with cumulus, you need station that goes with it.
Otherwise there are many cheaper stations fitting your wishes. Good luck, make a good decision.
