Weather Station Consoles to suit WH1081 Station

Post by souwesterly » Mon 23 Jul 2018 10:46 am

For many years I've been running basic Maplin-type weather stations, because as a retired 72 year old guy I've no great desire to buy the best, the most expensive nor the smartest gadgets.

These basic weather stations work well enough for me but right now it's my console that's my concern.

My console is perhaps 6 years old and a certain amount of dust has worked it's way inside which is somewhat annoying, so I want to replace it.
It's a Maxkon Receiver for a Model WH1081weather station.
However I can't find any replacements anywhere - so I wondered if any other consoles could be compatible and would match up with the weather station's requirements?

Any information would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
Chris

Hi,

Unfortunately, a "WH-1081 about 6 years old" could be any one of 6 versions, using one of three carrier frequencies (433, 868 or 915 MHz) and two wireless protocols (believed to be FSK and OOK). If it is electrically compatible with the "Maplin" stations then it will be 433 MHz , but 2012 is almost exactly when the change was made from the "Old" to "New" protocols.

However, even if you can identify the protocol (difficult), the "spare" Consoles are normally so expensive that it's usually better to purchase a complete new station and keep the external sensors (which are generally all compatible) as "spares" (they may well come in useful quite soon).

Complete stations and some spares are still available in UK from several sources, e.g. Clas Ohlson (theirs is actually an 868 MHz 1080 with RCC) or metcheck, etc. There are more details in some of my recent posts.

Cheers, Alan.

Hi Alan,

Damn - I had a feeling that that's what I'd hear!

There has been the occasional replacement console that's popped up on ebay but nothing recently, so I guess I'll either have to put up with a dusty view or upgrade.
The trouble is that my existing station works perfectly well and I even have a replacement central sender unit for it, so I'm loathe to just discard it simply for a bit of dust.
The other problem is that the next weather station 'up the ladder', so to speak, is a considerable leap in cost - from well less than £100 to well over £200 for something that works best with a PC rather than a phone.

Nevertheless, thanks for the info and the connection to your other posts on the subject.
I think I'll sit quietly and mull over my options for a bit...

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Have you seen the "Insides of...1081" thread? I've often been tempted to remove the "Touchscreen" (and replace it with a push-button matrix) to improve the clarity of the display. But maybe just cleaning it will suit you?

It's slightly "frightening" to remove the circuit board from the case (taking the back off is easy) but mine went back together again OK. ;)

Cheers, Alan.
