sound interaction

as a support worker i have a question for the coders. the young boy i am working with has very complex learning difficulties and can only press a button to interact with cause and affect software. he has no speech but can be very vocal with his own sounds. back to my question would it be possible to use a microphone for him to interact with the software for left click mouse control. the main reason for not wanting to use the button is he is 19 years old and will bite the cable and bang it of the ground and general wreck them.
so any ideas would be helpful

many thanks

You do not say which operating system you are using, but assuming it is Windows would it be possible to use the tools in the Ease of Access Center in Control Panel. If you want to use a microphone to control software you could use the Speech recognition software available there.

sorry should have said it would be windows. cant really use speech recognition software as he has no speech. he does make some sounds but nothing that would work with speech recognition. i was thinking more on the lines of what ever sound he makes has the same effect as left click to start with.

You can train the speech recognition to recognise almost any sound, it doesn't have to be actual speech. Trouble would be if he doesn't make a consistent sound, in that case you would always be training the software.

If you can get it to recognise a consistent sound you then allocate that to left click etc.

that was what we tried with him last week but as it is not consistent did not work. he makes 6 different sound but very random hence the reason to see if any code could be wrote that would work with any sound.

Not sure if this will do exactly what you need but this software allows the use of trigger noises to launch external programs. It doesn't say if multiple triggers can be configured but I'm sure the author will advise:
