I'm at 353.6mm for the year so far, the same period last year, i was at 120.4mm

Fields and flood plains have been pretty much water logged since the Summer last year.

Rain Jan to March this year 168.6mm, 188.6mm for the year to date. I was hoping for something drier, the 20mm so far today means the gardens virtually back to waterlogged again.

We've had a big drought in northern NZ this year too

I've recorded 60mm this year, 94mm in the last 4 months. That's pretty incredible when our annual average is 1200mm!

I've thought over the last few weeks that we are down on rain so far this year.....where do I find data of the norm?

Here's my data from Folkestone in Kent

Code: Select all

Rainfall for Jan = 48.3mm (avg for last 3 years = 72.4mm) 66% of last 3 years
Rainfall for Feb = 32.4mm (avg for last 3 years = 78.9mm) 41% of last 3 years
Rainfall for Mar = 30.6mm (avg for last 3 years = 47.6mm) 64% of last 3 years

Average Rainfall for 1st 3 months of 2013 = 37.1mm (avg monthly for last 3 years = 66.3mm) 56% of last 3 years
Total Rainfall for 1st 3 months of 2013 = 111.3mm (avg total for last 3 years = 198.9mm)
Rainfall so far for April = 19.2mm (avg for same period over last 3 years = 21.5mm

There are some figures here: http://www.weather.com/weather/wxclimat ... h/UKXX0058

I'm not sure what their source is.

I just searched the web for the 'norm' data - iirc it was probably based on the Manchester airport station data which is only a few miles from me.

We had 13.5 mm of rain so far, which makes this April also very dry.
The average of the longterm 1961-1990 period is actually 47.8 mm, but since the turn of the century, this is hardly reached.
Actually this has dropped to a meagre 25.9 mm average between the years 2006-2013, one could actually speak from a little "dry season".
Best Regards

I use the Met Office averages. The nearest station for Folkestone is the Ski Centre and the figures are shown at http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weat ... mateTables

There are several such Met Office sites around the UK that all have 30 year averages - very useful when making comparisons.

Thanks for that too...not sure how I have missed that before, as I often look around the MO site. Nice easy to use table format.

So using that against my figures:

Code: Select all

Rainfall for Jan = 48.3mm (avg for last 30 years = 72.5mm) 66% of last 30 years
Rainfall for Feb = 32.4mm (avg for last 30 years = 53.7mm) 60% of last 30 years
Rainfall for Mar = 30.6mm (avg for last 30 years = 52.5mm) 58% of last 30 years

Average Rainfall for 1st 3 months of 2013 = 37.1mm (avg monthly for last 30 years = 59.5mm) 62% of last 30 years
Total Rainfall for 1st 3 months of 2013 = 111.3mm (avg total for last 30 years = 178.7mm) 62% of last 30 years
Previous figures using my own records
