Classic cold front passage this morning

Post by peterh »

The cold front hanging off Steve's Low passed our back yard this morning at 09:00 sharp.

This was a classic cold front passage.
Preceded by:
  • dropping pressure
    gusty winds
maximum temp reached at 05:30 or thereabouts...
At almost exactly 09:00:
  • Temperature nosedives
    Dew point nosedives
Wind suddenly makes a clockwise sweep towards north
    pressure starts rising
patches of serious rain (today's rain has been corrected at around 11 am - FO saw 2.7mm, the 'manual' rain meter saw 5.4mm)
After the passage:
  • Wind speed falls
    Wind direction sways back
Sun comes out, but threatened by large quantities of Cumulus and Altocumulus.
That's how a cold front should behave. ;)

I checked my graphs for the front passing through but it wasn't particularly noticeable. However, at 13:30 today we had a squally shower and I recorded my second highest gust of all-time - 50mph. That's 80.5kph! Impressive. :o
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

The front would've passed you earlier - more like yesterday. But I don't think it was as well-developed as it was when we got it this morning. The shower you got was probably the follow-up trough.

Now you will what a true Canadian cold front looks like...
As we speak the temp is 9.9 C......
By tomorrow evening the temp will be about -13 C wind chill of - 28 C
100 km/h winds, snow squalls producing maybe 5 cm of snow

I will give you all the details by tomorrow afternoon when the cold front passes

I think I prefer our cold fronts. ;)

That transition sounds brutal. I shall enjoy looking at your trends page. :D

Same here in Quebec City. Pressure breaking record low and still falling. 973 for now. That is a prelude for pretty high wind that should start soon. Rain just stopped, fog is lifting. Hold on to your hat ! literally

And yes, that looks like a proper cold front as well. Wind speed and direction, temperature and humidity drop, pressure rise - it's all there.

And funnily enough, also at almost exactly 9 am. Is that some secret protocol that I'm unaware of? ;-)
