We are still on for the tail end of this hurricane. An interesting read on why we in the UK can never 'technically' have a hurricane

When I did my OU weather course I learnt that you need an extensive ocean surface with a temperature in excess of 27 °C in its
uppermost layers to form and feed a Hurricane (Tropical Cyclone), sadly we never see these temperatures around us!
Looking at the jet stream this deep low could easily track further south and hit middle England - where's Michael Fish when you need him

I watched the BBC1 weather forecast at 6:30pm tonight and the presenter talked about strong winds and rain on Monday but made no mention of ex-hurricane Katia. I despair, I really do.

It looks like they currently expect the centre to pass over the far north of Scotland, and hence for Northern Ireland, SW Scotland and the Central Belt to get the worst of it.

The powers that be probably think any mention of a hurricane will have everybody running round like headless chickens!RayProudfoot wrote:I watched the BBC1 weather forecast at 6:30pm tonight and the presenter talked about strong winds and rain on Monday but made no mention of ex-hurricane Katia. You're probably not wrong Brian. We're treated like children. Take a look at the Daily Mail online and you'd think a full-blown hurricane was heading our way. From one extreme to another!BrianGifford wrote:The powers that be probably think any mention of a hurricane will have everybody running round like headless chickens!RayProudfoot wrote:I watched the BBC1 weather forecast at 6:30pm tonight and the presenter talked about strong winds and rain on Monday but made no mention of ex-hurricane Katia. Well if we can never "technically" have a hurricane, but we can experience hurricane force winds, then surely we need a word for it here to warn of hurricane force winds, to make people take notice and precautions.
I remember being outside my bedroom window in 1987 on the conservatory roof attempting to safely bring down my 18ft aeria and 20ft mast at 3am in hurricane force winds....wans't easy, or fun.....I can only imagine what the channel was like, after seeing the Sealink ferry on the warren here in Folkestone the morning after

Source: http://doverferryphotos.co.uk/pastandpr ... engist.htmOctober 16th 1987: Hurricane gusts stuck the vessel whilst she was alongside at Folkestone. With lines constantly snapping she was forced to put to sea where she was hit by a wave of such force that falling machinery caused alternator damage after which all electrical power in the ship was lost. The SW winds, blowing to hurricane force, drove the stricken vessel onto the Warren (beach between Dover and Folkestone) where she was impaled by a knuckle of the concrete sea wall.

Getting hairy here in North Wales, severe gale & flood warnings over next 24hrs, my station has hit 35mph today and it is sheltered, i would say out on the coast (i was working today), the gusts were hitting 50mph EASILY.

Capel Curig (about 40 miles from me) has recorded 75mph overnight. My station has recorded 38 so far today, and the West coast of Anglesey has a flood warning in place, a couple of roads are closed due to fallen trees!!
Stay safe peeps

Starting to get more windy in central Scotland, but won't be anywhere near as bad as Wales / NI of course. Hope everyone stays safe.

Re: Hurricane Katia might get to the UK on Monday
Highest gust here was 36mph at 08:53 this morning. That won't even beat 40mph back in February let alone my high gust of 46mph back in Nov 2010.
Quite disappointing although my fence panels might have a different view.

Highest gust here of 32 mph, at midday. That's not bad, as my wind readings from the SW suffer, due to trees.
