Weather Summary for 2018

Post by RayProudfoot »

It would be interesting to read weather reports for 2018 from other stations around the world. Here in the UK we had a very warm and dry summer preceeded by a cold blast in late Feb / early March named by the media as "the beast from the east". :D

For my station here in Cheshire, England here are the headline stats for an interesting year...

Hottest Day 31.6C on 26 June. The all-time record of 32.1C on 1 July 2015 still stands.
Coldest Day -0.4C 1 March.
Warmest Night 17.7C on 1/2 September.
Coldest Night -6.3C on 27/28 February.
Lowest Windchill -10.6C 28 February.
Wettest Day 0.87” (22.1mm) on 20 September.
Highest Rainfall Rate 3.76” (95.5mm)/hr on 24 January.
Wettest Month January with 3.91” (99.3mm).
Driest Month June with 0.22” (5.6mm).
Longest Dry Period 26 days. 17 June – 12 July.
Longest Wet Period 8 days. 14-21 January.
Highest Gust 53mph 1 March.
Highest 10-minute Wind Speed 24mph 12 October.
Lowest Humidity 22% 28 June.
Highest Pressure 1039.5hPa 22 October
Lowest Pressure 981.5hPa 3 January
Annual Rainfall 24.89” (632mm). A new record for this station. In comparison 2012 had 40.26” (1023mm).

Period of Greatest Heat 24 June to 16 July. Maxima exceeded 24C on every day.

Maxima of 30C or higher on 25, 26, 28 and 29 June and 1, 26 and 27 July.

There were 92 days when the maxima reached or exceeded 21C. Previous record was 66 in 2014 and 59 in 2013.

The temperature reached 21C in every month from April to October. Last achieved in 2011.

There were 158 days with recorded rain. The lowest since I started keeping records in May 2009. In comparison 2012 – the wettest - had 203.

Every month had below average rainfall except January, April and September. June had just 8% of the average, November 40%, May 50%, October 59%, August 63%, July 72%, March 84%, February 89% and December 91%. September had 113%, January 139% and April 156%.

The average temperature for 2018 was 11.1C, just 0.2C higher than 2017. The very warm summer was offset by a cold late winter / early spring.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

wow - that's low rainfall compared to here.

December was the wettest month I have recorded on this station. 189.8mm. November and December combined was 336.2mm. Total for the year was 994.2mm. 166 rain days. Sunshine was way above average though 1689.1 hours recorded and that figure is on the low side.

2018 was an interesting year for us here in suburban SW London. The garden is fairly sheltered as it is an suburban environment and is a bit of a sun trap. Temperature measurements taken in a Stevenson screen (older wood one and not the current plastic spec one) and are probably slight high in the summer as we have a tall wood fence round the garden which limits wind slightly, but represents the temperature in the center of the garden well. Wind anemometer is at about 10m off the ground and is unobstructed by buildings/trees and the rain gauge is a tipping bucket version and again is not obstructed.

49 days of air frost (Jan:4, Feb:19, Mar: 11, Oct:3, Nov:4, Dec:8) vs 61 in 2017.
2 days where it never went above freezing in March vs nil in 2017.
66 days where the high was above 27(c) (Apr:3, May:6, Jun: 16, Jul:26, Aug:13, Sep:2) vs 39 in 2017
A record low temperature of -9.4(c) on 28th feb (I started taking records here in 2014).
A high of 37.6(c) on 23 July - 38(c) is my all time high on 24/8/16.

Total rain of 525.1mm which is below average and below 588.8mm in 2017 which was very close to long term London average.

Highest wind was 32mph(18 jan) and the average was 3.6mph vs 3.8mph in 2017.

Record longest wet period of 10 days in April and record longest dry period of 52 days starting from July (it is a tipping bucket gauge so could have missed some small <1mm amounts of rain).

Sun hours and soil temperatures not yet analysed.

Hi Matt,
We spoke to our son and grandsons on December 21st in the morning (we FaceTime every Friday morning) and I remember him saying that it was quite hot there in Brisbane.

Our 2018 was quite typical...
