Ground Shaking

Post by WoodburyMan »

Not necessarily weather.. but more Geological. We've had a series of earthquakes in my state.
http://www.woodburyweather.com/wxquake.php
5 Quakes greater than a 2.0 in the last week, with 11+ overall quakes including aftershocks.

It's about 70mi or so from me. The M3.3 quake actually was strong enough to shake my mouse on my computer and bring it out of sleep mode. Timing lined up perfect to, a minute or two after the official time, time it would take to transfer through the ground I believe 70mi. There seems to be one at least every day or a few between 4am and 8am every morning. The latest was at 4am this morning.

When quakes reach us from Indonesia to Australia, they generally take 3 minutes when 1500km away, moving at about 30,000kmhr. 70 miles should only take 10-15 seconds to reach you at that pace, but then it might be slower moving in the upper mantle, whereas it has to go through a deeper section to get to us and may be quicker for that reason.
Here is a post I made from a 5.3 in October last year. https://www.facebook.com/29759796028273 ... =3&theater

Can't imagine what a 5.3 would feel like. Here we get Hurricanes and tropical storms (2011, 2012), 3ft-4ft of snow in 24 hours (2011 and 2013), major flooding (8.5in of rain in 24 hours), and I can deal with it all. Earthquakes always scare me as there's no forecasting, and nothing you can do to prepare. One reason why you'll never find me living in a active fault zone.

My timing I realized might be off as that's when the system came online, not when the request/mouse movement was made. So it could be a minute or so off. Didn't know earthquakes traveled that fast.
