Hi,
A slight detour into the terminology....

I was surprised when I heard a BBC weather presenter saying that was winter had now ended. This was news to me.
Perhaps it's being an astronomer but winter doesn't end (as far as I had been aware up to this point!) until the equinox, March 21st.

Spring is 22nd March to 21st June, summer is 22nd June to 21st September and finally autumn is 22nd September to December 21st (+/- a day now and then due to orbital anomalies and calendar irregularities). This is pretty much what I was taught. It can still be bitterly cold and snowy well into March (even in the UK). As some of our North American friends have pointed out it is in effect still very much winter over there.

However, does anyone know where or why these differences come about?, is this just a UK Met Office thing?

cheers,
Bill.

PS. Taking winter as Dec, Jan and Feb it's been my wettest in at least 5 years.
December 175.3mm, January 157.0mm and February 167.3mm. It rained on 72 days out of the 90.
Also the lowest pressure I've ever recorded 954 mb on 26/27th Dec.

Bill,

This topic is taking a different direction to what I imagined and I don't think I can add any more except this link to a Met Office explanation as to why they avoid using equinoxes and solstices to determine the start and end of seasons.

Sorry Ray if my comments, which were intended somewhat in jest to emphasize our continuing harsh winter this year, has led away from your initial intent of this thread's subject. That link is a very simple and good explanation on weather seasons. And like so many things in our now small world, there are still many differences and local customs. Before I found these hobbyist's weather forums I was under the impression only we in the Great Lakes basin had unique and complicated weather. I have certainly found different and your weather threads have been a good part of that learning.

No apology necessary Paul - honest! :) I'd assumed that most of the world used the same months for season delimiters with the obvious differences between northern and southern hemispheres.

Our weather stations' data fed via Cumulus allow us to see in detail the climate of enthusiasts around the world and that has to be a good thing. As to season starts and ends the French have a saying for it...Vive la différence :D
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

I know this thread is for winter in the northern hemisphere but I thought I post how summer has been here in the southern hemisphere. It was very much below average for rainfall and above average for maximum temperatures.

Average Temperature: 24.9 C (0.4 Cbelow average)
Lowest Monthly average Temperature: 23.9 C – December 2013
Highest Monthly average Temperature: 25.1 C – January 2014
Average Minimum Temperature: 19 C (17.4 C – Dec, 19.8 C – Jan, 19.9 C – Feb) – 1C below average
Average Maximum Temperature: 30.8 C (30.5 C – Dec, 31.0 C – Jan, 31.0 C – Feb) – 0.6 C above average

Lowest Minimum Temperature: 12.8 C 12 December 2013
Highest Maximum Temperature: 40.6 C on 4 January 2014 (new all-time record)
Maximum Temperature >30 C: 60 days (22– Dec, 19 – Jan, 19 – Feb)
Maximum Temperature >35C: 11 days (2– Dec, 4– Jan, 5 – Feb)
Minimum Temperature <20 C: 48 days (14– Dec, 14 – Jan, 20 – Feb)
Minimum Temperature <15 C: 7 days (only in December)

Total rainfall: 139.9mm (49.7mm– Dec, 69.8mm – Jan, 20.4mm – Feb), with only 31 per cent of the average recorded and is 314.8mm below average. Driest Summer I have yet recorded with the official Brisbane station recording it driest summer since 1985/86.
December 2013: 49.7 mm, 93.8 mm below average (35 per cent of average received)
January 2014: 69.8 mm, 74.5mm below average (48 per cent of average received)
February 2014: 20.4 mm, 146.5mm below average (12 per cent of average received). Lowest I have recorded for this month. The official Brisbane reading 15.4mm is the lowest since 1919 when 8.2 mm was recorded at the now closed site 0.9 km away from the current site

Number of rain days: 33 days (10– Dec, 13 – Jan, 10– Feb)
Highest Daily Total: 24.6mm on 24 January 2014
Number of days >2mm: 7 days (3– Dec, 4 – Jan, 3– Feb)

Lowest Air pressure of 998.5 hPa on 4 January 2014
Highest Air pressure of 1022.7 hPa on 18 December 2013
Average summer Air pressure of 1012.9 hPa

Highest Wind Gust: 49.2 km/hr 1 January 2014
Highest Average Wind Speed: 38.7 km/hr 1 January 2014
Total Wind Run: 5371.4 km (1650.6– Dec, 2029.9– Jan, 1690.9 – Feb)

Average Minimum Grass Temperature: 16.9 C (1.5 C less than the previous summer)
Lowest Minimum Grass Temperature: 10.0 C on 7 December 2013
Highest Minimum Grass Temperature: 21.7 C on 18 February 2014
Highest Difference from Air Temperature: 3.9 C on 16 February 2014
Lowest Difference from Air Temperature: 0.8 C on 12 December 2013

This pattern of above average maximum temperatures and below average rainfall has continued since last August except for November with an absence of troughs/ low pressure systems that bring rain with a strong presence of high pressure systems off the coast giving some showers.

Average Temp - 1 Dec - 28 Feb = 6.5C (1981-2010 average 4.1C)

Number of days with minima at or below 0C =5 .......12th Dec / 10,11,12 and 20th Jan

Maximum Temperature = 13.3C on 24 February.

Lowest Pressure = 973.86hPa on 14 February

Number of days with rainfall = 77 (out of 90). Of which >=1.0mm…63. Of which >=10.0mm…13.

Highest wind gusts - 46mph on 25 January and 42mph on 15 February. (2nd & 3rd all-time highest)

Rainfall Winter total 396.6mm (1981-2010 average 216.8mm)

Sunshine December 66. 0 hrs. (139%) / January 75.4 hrs.(124%) / February 83.4 hrs. (126%)
Odd winter, despite record rain also record sunshine. This arose due to above average days with broken cloud and at times sunshine sunup to sunset. The two highest recorded hours in each month were December 6.0 and 5.7 / January of 5.9 and 5.1 / February 8.1 and 7.8
