2014 Greatest Temperature Range

Post by RayProudfoot »

The winter in the UK has been dominated by the North Atlantic. Hence why we have had little or no snow across most of the lower-lying parts of the UK and few frosts.

This has resulted in a pretty limited temperature range. For this station it's a paltry 11.8C. :o

The lowest temp was 0.0C on 12 January and the highest 11.8C on 5 January. This must be some sort of record.

So I'm interested to know what the temperature range has been at your stations. I'm guessing that Canada, the US and Australia are probably going to be at the top assuming we have no Cumulus users in Siberia or Outer Mongolia! :D
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

The lowest temp was -25,3°C on 24 January and the highest 3,7°C on 1 January. This is not unusual in central Finland ;)

January 2014 range for me was 11.7°C (-0.2 ... 11.5) - astonishingly close to Ray's 11.8°C a few miles away. :o

The 30th January only had a daily range of 1.5°C

Over the summer in Australia up until recently we had very warm days with hot northerly winds from inland and below average rainfall but in the last week strong high pressure systems in the Tasman Sea are directing cooler onshore winds onto the east coast with some isolated showers.

Therefore the temperature range is slightly higher than normal and for the summer it is as the following:

December: Monthly Average of 23.9 C, daily average of between 20.0 C and 28.5 C. Monthly Average Range of 13.3 C, daily range of between 6.1 C and 18.3 C. Average Min of 17.4 C, Average Max of 30.5 C and temperature ranging between 12.8 C and 36.8 C.

January: Monthly Average of 25.1 C, daily average of between 18.0 C and 31.4 C. Monthly Average Range of 11.8 C, daily range of between 6.3 C and 15.6 C. Average Min of 19.8 C, Average Max of 31.0 C and temperature ranging between 17.2 C and 41.3 C.

February (to 4 February): Monthly Average of 24. 5 C, daily average of between 24 C and 25.3 C. Monthly Average Range of 11.2 C, daily range of between 9.3 C and 13.8 C. Average Min of 18.9 C, Average Max of 30.2 C and temperature ranging between 17.1 C and 30.9 C.

That makes an average temperature of 24.5 C and an average range of 12.1 C.

Milka, so that gives your station a range of 29C. Not surprising for that part of the world.

Mark, Two well set-up stations. :) Bit surprised your low is only 0.2 lower than mine. Shows the big influence of the Atlantic.

Matt, lots of data but it's only the 2014 range I'm after. So it looks like 41.3 - 17.1 = 24.2. Maybe you'll get some lower overnight minima before the end of Feb.

Keep 'em coming in. C preferred for our American cousins if possible please. :D I'm sure someone will beat the 30C barrier.

Ron, thanks. Not surprised your station has a greater range than UK ones. I agree it's been a very warm winter but the UK press have only been concentrating on the high rainfall especially in the south and SW.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

Pretty flat here, with a surprisingly high max of 8.8 & min -2.1 = 10.9C range.

Still only the 9th warmest January.

He was quite damning of the Environment Agency - responsible for protecting us from floods and much more. You guys know all about holding the sea back so I wouldn't be surprised if your expertise was requested.

If he had wet trousers it probably wouldn't bother him. He likes to be close to the people.

And we have a new leader! Thanks Kerry. 37.5C Not surprised in the least by your readings. Your weather has made the news over here on a few occasions.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

Hi Ray,

Folks in the Midwest were much colder than the Northeast. Maybe you'll get a new record from someone located there.

January - Komoka, Canada (most southerly part of the Country but not the mildest part as that is along the Pacific coast):
2014 Hi 7.3c Jan 13, all time station 14.0c Jan 30/13
2014 Lo -25.6c Jan 22 which is an all time station record for January (2013 -16.8c)
for a range of 32.9c

2014 Avg Hi -3.8c (2013 1.6c)
2014 Avg Lo -13.8c (2013 -7.2c)
2014 Mean -8.3c (2013 -2.4c)

We usually get a January thaw before the coldest days that usually come in early February, but this year's many cold January days will be hard to beat, especially the wind chill.

Quite a range so far this year - 37.1°C , maximum temperature was 40.8°C on January 28th and a low this morning, February 5th,of 3.5°C. Glad I hadn't put the electric blanket away. :)

The lowest it's likely to get here later in the year is -2°C or -3°C (-2.1°C was the record last year) . Highest temperature since I've had the weather station going was 42.1°C in January last year.
